I had no idea what I was doing with my first pond  . For the children I would set up the wading pool add water and they would jump in. I thought I could get a pond add water and throw in some fish. A quick, easy Saturday morning project.
Little did I know I would need to study biology  , chemistry , plumbing , landscaping , electrical , flow rates , city bylaws , gardening , and engineering .
I did not know or care which direction the wind blew across my yard, or the location of bedrock, sewer and gas lines below. I paid no attention to which trees lost leaves let alone where the roots were. No clue where the rain drained off my roof. Hadn't heard of BD, TT, DOC, LOL, AFK, BRB or any CSH. Nor did I know about the likes and dislikes of raccoons, herons and hawks.
Now I wonder if I'll ever learn the just the basics of koi ponds in my lifetime  . One thing I have figured out in time for pond renovations in the spring is:
BEFORE BEGINNING ANY POND RENOVATIONS, HAVE ATLEAST THREE SETS OF BACK-UP PLANS. MAKE SURE TO LEAVE THE LAST ONE OPEN BECAUSE THE FIRST TWO WON'T WORK  .
