Pond Net Can't Post

Does anyone have pictures of their ponds with what they use to stop herons from eating their Koi?
I need some ideas as my pond has been attached every year. I live near the bay and wish I could
find something that is attractive since I will need to leave it on most of the time. Thanks Judy

Judy,

A lot of ppl use bird netting even myself. I know it doesn't look nice but I can't afford to loose all my treasuresSmile You can also try aligator head that work with air pump. Some ppl swore that it works wellWink

Good luck and I hope you find your solution fastAngelic

Fishing line is not a easy to see and works great. Unless you walk right up on it you cant even see it. Run the fishing line about a foot apart all across the pond. Wont have to worry about the birds anymore or what your pond looks like as this wont hurt the looks of the pond.

Cool yes, I've done that too for a temp situation and it worked well! Herons wont bother where they can't get under and do a wing span apparently. At least that is what I've been told. I won't mention glittered gazing balls and messed up signals for the birds. I'm thinking about building an arbor over mine this year if I can figure it out. Just three more months and I can begin to feed my babies hopefully. KFG, hope you are feeling better! I'm off to the caribbean tomorrow!

Once I tried too hard to control things in the pond....the frogs left.

Depending on the pond location... that is in the open, closed in..etc.... a motion detector connected to a few sprinklers will scare them... they will fly away... or as suggested... netting... or a 'dog ware' or animal wire (low voltage when touched...at about 3 inches to a foot high...will do the trick!!!

SmileThanks for the news. Would like to see your pictures. I'm considering putting up a large gazebo they sell with screening already built in. My pond is small enough for a 12x12. They sell for about 400.00. It would also make the pond attractive. This should keep the birds away. Still considering the net also. Judy

WinkHi Gabriele, not sure if you received my email but YES I remember you. Your pond is quite large, how did you net it? Must have been alot of netting. I didn't think you had a problem with Heron. Do you ever hear from Bran Muffin? Have you heard if Regans plan another Koi show? Judy

Re: [judyvic1] Pond Net [In reply to] Can't Post

Every year we place a canopy over our pond to provide shade (helps with algae) and to keep the large birds out.

We buy them at Target and they measure 10' x 10' and only cost about $30. They last for an entire season, but we tend to have to buy a new one each year (small rips, fading, etc.). You could probably get two seasons out of one in some areas. Made by Coleman.

Couldn't find them on Target's Website but they look just like this one (only 10 x 10, cheaper and in green with black poles) http://store.tentsetc.com/coshlosh.html

We dress ours up with strings of outdoor lights and hang lanterns with tea-light candles in them.

It hides the pond from an aerial view and if birds do come around they don't like to go under it because it is too hard for them to takeoff.

Another thing we like is that it is light weight and two of us canpick it up and place it over our desck or yard to allow some sun on the pond and still enjoy the shade wherever we want.

Thanks for the post. Nice idea except its windy here and we would have to net the outside of the canopy as one side of our ponds is against a walkway. And thats were that bird lands. It gets a great view of the fish except its totally covered now. So besides the canopy it would also need to be screened. I'm sure I will make a decision on what method we want to use by end of summer. Don't like the idea of a net but that may be my only option. Thanks again, I like your idea. JudyWink

A net could help with Raccoons also.
Sometimes a Raccoon will sneak up in the middle of the night......
I have been fighting a Heron myself. Nasty creature. It just won't give up.

I agree, Raccoons can be dangerous. Fortunately we do not have Raccoons visit us, at least so far. Besides Herons, we also have had an Egret too. We are so close to the Bay, we see many different species of birds. And YESUnsure they are very stubborn, they keep coming back even after you chase it off or throw something at it. It just sits on top of that neighbors roof waiting for you to leave. JudySly

Here's my netted pond, as long as you pull the netting tight over the top it isn't too bad.

Very Nice!!! You can hardly see the netting. How difficult will it be for you when you need to clean the pond? Occasionally we have to clean the bottom of the pond and remove the filter. Will the netting be easy for you to remove for this reason? Judy

Well plan is once the paving is down we put hooks in the side of the slabs and the netting will just hook into that, with 2 sturgeon on the bottom and tench and once I get my stand pipe sorted for my side outlet I shouldn't get any/much rubbish settle on the bottom.

Netting is pretty easy to remove at the moment weighted under a few rocks.
