Pond conversion Can't Post

SmileHi members,
Its been quite a while since i post some thread regarding my pond with green water. Advises from our dttk, hwang, kevkoi and some others effectively help me to achieve clear & good water parameter. my pond was pump-fed system then. however,8 months ago i converted it to gravity system using syphon teknic. i didnt recontruct the pond for fear of leakage instead i dugged a filter chamber by the side ofthe pond.5 chambers in all.1st chamber..mechanical chamber consists of calourful domestic brushes..(harga banyak murah) here is where 2-in pipe suck in water by syphon system.. 2nd...green mate 3rd also green mate...4th coral chips & bio balls....5th the pump.water since then very much clearer than before. here are some of the photos of my converted pond.

unable to upload photos cos exceeded 97.7kb. how then can i upload those pictures for members to see & comment

Hi HAji, Congratulations on a great idea. My cousin's husband is also using the siphon technique to draw water from pond to filter. He was afraid of pipe leakage if he used bottom drain. The sytem worked well in his current FT set up. So it seems it works for you in a pond set up. See how fast one can learn when he is koi crazy.

Hi JoesKoi, here are sketches of the filter chamber;
1. Top View drawing
2. Side View "

Some explanations on Top View:All chambers are connected by underground pipe. main purpose is for cleaning of debris by means of a pump. There is no discharge chamber.

Side View: water from pond is suck in by a pair of 2" pvc (siphon techn.)to chamber 1.
and flows over to chamber 2. From chamber 2 water then flows under to chamber
3 and passes through 5 layers greenmate arranged vertically down before going
over to chamber 4 where bio balls & coral chips are. Water in chamber 4 finally
flows through underground pipe to chamber 5 and where the pump is connected to
waterfall.

Hopefully you can faham my poor technical drawing as well as my poor explanationsBlush pls.don't laugh o.k.Frown

sincerely
HJ.Jamall

what size pump are you running? its good that the two 2" pipes can keep up.

also, what happens during a power failure?

how did you start up the siphon?

Askm, tuan Hj

I'm also interested in all this syphoning issue. Its something new to me...... as far as a pond is concerned la SlySlySly. Just very curious so that i can add another filter without drilling a hole through the pond.

Cheers

Re: [JoesKoi] Pond conversion [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi JoesKoi,
the answer is no. i just slide in the glass partition into the groove already there . groove were moulded into place when cement wall was still wet. the box has an RC.before cement was pured in. wooden frame were erected to form the final shape of the chamber.these wooden frame were lowered down into rectangular hole that i dug myself. see pixs. "Kayu inchi" what they call it ,were nailed to wooden frame so that when cement was poured in ,grooves were formed. when cement dried i hacked out the kayu inchi leaving groove that glass can be slide down. hope you can picture how its done

Re: [aragorn] Pond conversion [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi aragorn,
sorry i can't remember pump size but i do remember the cost.its almost 400RM.Made of stainless steel. talk about power failure, if too long most likely all my fish will die, becos i don't have battery powered pump to suppliment it.so far i'm still lucky that power failure do happen but for a short while only. To start the siphon its very simple. i just dip the pvc into pond & let water fill up to both end .Then before i lift pipe out of water i use my palm to block both end of it. After that i lower at one end into chamber 1 while the other into pond.Next i just remove my palm at the same time from the pipe end. Thats it.Winkwater just flow in.to stop it just raise one end above water level.

I thought bottom pipe is only the natural way for water to flow into filter box by pull of gravity. And you don't need to use siphon system. Oooiii......the rest of forum members correct me if i'm wrong.tolong.!.tolong..!..Shocked

Jamal, I could see that you're getting alot of feedback regarding your new system Wink. You're answering well my friend, don't worry Sly. Yes, you're right. If JoesKoi is building a new pond, he could incorporate the bottom drain directly to the 1st chamber of a similar filter like yours. There's no need for a siphoning pipe. Have a good weekend. Smile

SmileWa'alai k salam,
I think you don't need the system because with extra flow of water to your filter chamber ,your pump will not be able cope up & may even cause an overflow of your filter chamber. Unless you have a pump that can efficiently drive water back to pond. Hope i'm answering you correctly.

Re: [Haji Jamall] Pond conversion [In reply to] Can't Post

Tuan Haji,

Just to confirm whether we are talking about the same syphon. In your case the pond water level should be a little bit higher that the water level in the filter chambers. A pump with suitable flow rate will ensure that sufficient water is pumped out of the filter chambers so that the level therein will remain a little bit lower than the level in the pond. The correct pump with the correct flow rate is crucial here.

The reason i'm interested in this system is that i think eventually i will have to add another filter to my pond apart from the submerged media filter and the trickle tower I'm having now. Both the filters are supplied with water from the two 2" bottom drains in the pond. This was suggested to me by sifu Dttk. He saved me from buying another pump unnecessarily. Thanks Dttk.

I may have to use this syphon system for my third filter. Just to ensure that the water is always in pristine condition and i may feed my fish 1 or 2 times more than usual. Feeding time is the best time. Don't you agree Tuan Haji? I may also add one or two more kois.

Regards

Halim
