Update Can't Post

Hi all.
Thought id give an update. My new filter is doing the business- its trapping alot of waste and having to be flushed regulary. However i stil have green water and havnt seen a noticeable imporvement in water quality since i added the new barrel filter. I also have noticed i have a leak in the liner somewher as the water level drops every week by a considerable amount- this works out well as it means i just have to top the pond up for the water change lol. Im gona have to fix the leak in the bottom pond. I may replace the liner so if this is the case i will dig my pond a little deeper and have a flat surface rather than the banked slopes i have currently in my pond- therfore increasing gallonage of the pond.
Hope all the regulars zoul koi 38 are all okSmile

Do you think my greenwater is because my Uv is not powerful enough or is it because i dont have a big enough filter area

Smithy,

I know you just added new filter a while ago. You have to give it time to matureSmile But to answer your question, yes you need bigger filter. If you can accomodate 50% filter(surface area) and TT then you may not need a UV unit but if can't at least 30% will do. You have to do regular cleaning, reduce stocking level, etcWink

Re: [smithy] Update [In reply to] Can't Post

New Pond Syndrome should really be called "New Filter Syndrome" IMHOTongue. It doesn't take much to make water go green and the addition of a new filter always seems to make things go green again, especially if you are prone to it already. A little more time will help, but like Jon said, filter surface area is very important.
Another thing that may make a difference. Have you tested for gh/kh levels? Your filter won't kick off as quickly if they're too low and the algae thrives in low calcium carbonate water causing ph swings. That can cause your bacterial growth cycles to run up and down rather than steadily upward.

Cheers guys. Jon you read my mind. Just been thinking about building a TT. I have seen some long plastic plant containers. thinking about building a bracket which will hold up three of these and then drill holes through to allow the water to trickle down and fill with some lava rock or some sort of media and use my old pump to power it. What u think?

Smithy,

Do you know the size of this container??? How about some pics???

Use lava rock, it has good surface area, should last at least 5 yrs before replacing and El cheapoWink

No but i will find out and get back to you. Yea that was my idea. I will go and measure the ones i had in mind and find out the volume of them. These ones are maybe a little deep and not as long as im after but iv definitly seen the sort im thinking about. Will try and get some pictures sorted out. Or find something similar on the web so i can post a pic
Get back to you all soon

Right just measured it. Each plastic container holds up to a maxiumum of 5 gallons of water. thinking of 2 of three of these with a shelf underneath to allow the water to run back to the pond. What use think?

Smithy,

For TT to work properly the height must be 6ft and should have enough open area for gas exchangeSmile

Good luck mateWink

Jon's right. If you can STACK them one on top of the other with open breathing space between for aeration and de-gassing you'll have a tower-shower. I don't know how deep each one is, but you'll need more than two or three to get much benefit at all if they only hold 5gal.

Re: [larz1] Update [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey guys-long time no see. Hi to the regulars koi 38 zoul larz1 etc if youse are all still here. Forgot all about this forum, however springs here and i ended up doing some maintenance to the pond and then i remebered about here.
An update on the pond is basically that im currently reducing stocking levels. Iv managed to get rid of 6 goldfish so far to a mate and hoping to get rid of a few more today as another mate wants them.
Basically because i just started feeding wheat germ last week and my pond's water has gone green and quite murky, so im thinking theres 2 many fish in now. Once its cleared back up i have about 20 small goldfish/shunbukin crosses which i am going to place in a natural pond about 10 minutes from my house. The problem is i cant see them to catch them at the minute to get rid of them sooner lol. Once iv done this it will leave me with my koi and a few large godfish. By reducing the stocking levels i am hoping that my water stays clearer this summer and in turn i wont need to do as much maintanace- hope to get some pictures up in a few weeks once the pond has cleared back up

Hello, as we all know, DO NOT DO THINGS SMALL!! Do things right from the beginning. 5 gal is too small! It is just as easy if not easier to buy a big plastic trash can and drill a 3 inch hole at the bottom for the water to return to the pond , and fill this trash can with bio media, And with a pump have this water go to the top of the trashcan like a shower effect and have this TRICKLE down through and over all the media.! A 5 gal is too small because there is no space for water flow, I mean to move the water necesary you need a nice pump, and this pump will fill a 5 gal in seconds, or will go into this way to fast, thus washing off the good bacteria before it can take hold of the media!

Jim- sorry maybe was a bit misleading posting after this topic. My trickle tower idea was last year and i have not deemed it neccessary to build one at the moment. It may be a future project and i will take what you have said on board- i was just posting to say hi again and that im back now its the spring

Re: [smithy] Update [In reply to] Can't Post

There has now been a total of 25 2-3 inch fish transferred out of my pond- which will surely help my filter system cope this year. I have managed to get rid of 11 to a mate and currently have the remaining 14 in an old big fishtank in the garden and hopefully gona find them a new home aswell.
With all of these fish now out of the pond i am hoping to see an improvement in the water clarity and hopefully be able to see more of my koi this summer. I will post some pictures once the water begins to clear up.
