Thats awful. I had a heron bothering my fish last year, had to put a net over the pond. One a.m. my soulmate found me sitting outside wrapped in a blanket with a whaffle bad in my hand. He woke me up saying "hello slugger!" It''s a sad thing. I now have an alligator head in the pond and a pest sprayer. Together they were a lot of money but..... I love my koi. Good luck. I don't know about storks but heron are really hard to hit with anything. judy

Once I tried too hard to control things in the pond....the frogs left.

Your best bet is to net the pond, the heron will not be able to get to the koi and will tire and leave, just make sure the net is not in the water as the heron will peck through the net to get to the koi and if it is up high enough he cant get to them, you dont want him spearing the koi either. All he does is kill them if the net is laying in the water.

So sorry about all your koi, badkarma!! That really sucks!!@%$!!

I've had some run ins with those dang heron lately also.
I did net my pond but, as I was reading koifishgirl's post, I had a funny feeling I should check the pond as my net was sitting kinda low yesterday.

Wouldn't you know it! That dang bird was back, standing in the low spot, just like she said!! So I stuck some poles under it for now, until I can get some good bamboo to make a frame.

Then I had this weird idea, and made this "Scareheron" from an old wet suit and some halloween stuff. Hope it works at least until tommorow when I'll get the frame stuff. koifishgirl thanks for the heads up!

Hi cuda! I can totally relate about guarding the pond! Tell us how the pest sprayer works out. I don't think the alligator head works too well out here on the west cost(I have one), I guess cause the herons and raccoons have never seen them! LOL!

how about a portable electrified net..

http://docs.nemtek.com/nemdocs/Other%20products/Fido-Stop%20installation%20manual.pdf?PHPSESSID=713ff9e1f901dd2646bd44779307c387

or something similar. it won't kill the bird, just zap it.

glad I don't have big bird problems in my part of the world or else it would be in bird heaven.

Just wondering if you have had anymore visits from your Koi killer?
I have had a Heron that just won't stop. I finally bought a pellet gun.....
Over half of my Koi have been eaten.

He showed up once about a week ago, but we scared him off in time, right now my pond is a pea green, so that might contribute to the fact that he didnt get any. about 2 weeks ago i brought my out from thier inside winter home and put them into the pond, thus far i have some new tennants in the pond. some tadpoles and frogs. kinda reluctant to get any more Chagoi even though i love that breed unfortunately too friendly with herons and wildlife around
last year i had them feeding out of my hand, might not go for that this year, even though they are skiddish it might be better for thier survival.

It's tough when the Koi become so trusting.
I had a beautiful two1/2 year old Sanke just starting to show Black. He was my favorite. That will be the last one removed by my little Heron. My Heron has moved to the big fish pond in the sky.Tongue

Theres one simple solution to all your problems, go to your local garden centre and buy some netting. If you have a ground level pond secure it with some pegs or some stone and the same idea for a raised pond. As long as you keep it neat and trim it to meet the size of your pond it looks fine. I had a lot of problems with herons and lost a few of my goldfish(not a big deal) and one koi. Its the cheapest solution to protect your pond and it works

If you pond has pretty much straight sides with very few shallow areas do you have to worry about the cranes still?

We have them over at the park and the creek so I hope once I get mine built they don't someone spot it and find it interesting.

When I get done, I was going to put some plastic milk crates at bottom with rocks on top so they have sumwhere to hide should something get in. I plan on it being 5-6 ft deep by the time I'm done.

yes if you can keep the sides straight and don't have any ledges then they don't have much of a place to stand. Cover is a good idea but try to get something with smooth edges so the fish don't hurt themselves.

Some people use floating Alligator heads or plastic statues of Great Horned Owls to keep predatory birds away. Both seem to work pretty good.

If I have to rely on the great horned owl plastic replica I have I'll be in big trouble as it gets nocked off its perch almost daily by the normal birds and has to be picked up and replaced. They've even been known to perch on its head.

We have the same problem with a very healthy heron population. If storks are like herons then they will not land in the water but prefer to land near the pond and walk up to it. We have installed an electic fence around the pond. The birds do not cross it although we have seen them pacing up and down on the lawn looking for a way through. That's fine, they really make beautiful lawn ornaments!

That sucks! I remember my brother had put about 300 Koi when we first started. Then I would see this cool white long legged bird and thought how cool. Well, before we knew it. They where all gone. I was young and my brother had the same idea about the pellet gun.

Don't use a pellet gun becouse the ammo is made of harmfull metals to your koi. Instead get an Airsoft gun, that shoots plastic bb's. Plus there are full automatic. (M16,M60,MP5)

I'm really supprised at how many views this post got compared to other posts who have been here 7 times as long. Seems disaster attracts attention. So your not happy with your pond? You like to hear about someone elses bad experence than just another post about how happy someone else is with their pond?

Like those who slow down to watch a traffic accident on the side of the road, no matter how small, just to make you feel better about yourself seeing someone else in a bad situation.

Just an observation. Two thousnad two hundred and sixteen views in just a couple of days! WOW.

Ok, my next post well be "My best x-girl friend ate all my Kio alive, just to get back at me". Maybe i'll get over 2k views in 3 days!!

jazzmo...

Well....you don't hear about all the babies born everyday in the news...but you do hear about the dead ones....Unsure

That's the way it goes I guess....

However I think mos tof us here is talking about how to solves a predator problem....and not to feel happy over someone else's loss...

I remember when I was in high school one of my socials teachers had a similar talk on this observation.....lolLaugh

Large white Egret got me for 48 ... they don't just eat ...the also enjoy stabing them and not eating them....If you, for some reason, would prefer not to kill them, then a 'pea shotter' or sling shot with marbles works pretty well!
However, if you are int he USA, you do have a casuality lost(taxes)!!!!

I have a new Heron from Hell that has started visiting. Been here three times over three days.
Luckily my pond is four feet deep on one end now.
I will take care of this one the same way I took care of the one last year.Wink

Re: [virginiakoi] VISIT FROM THE STORK THIS MORN, NOT THE GOOD KIND [In reply to] Can't Post

I haven't had any heron problems on my pond, but recently a cat started circling the pond at night, luckily I several security cameras outside our property, one of them overlooking the pond and that's how I noticed a cat that comes around and circles the pond studying his options to catch a fish, usually late at night. I get out immediately and scare the cat away, then it wont return for a couple of days, however he does return again and give it another shot after a while. That was till I bought an 'Scarecrow", it is basically a motion sensor which triggers a strong burst of water spray when motion is detected... it works great!
Now, like I said before, I never seen it work for herons, since I don't get them here but it is definitively worth a shot. The other benefit of this gadget is that it works automatically and since no one can always be on pond watch for predators etc, this is a great option.
I got a good laugh when finally one night after setting up the Scarecrow the cat came, the lil bastid jump and did a U-turn in midair when the water burst got him lol!! I am getting more fun than expected with the camera pointed at pond and the scarecrow now, I also noticed that the cat has given up, every now and then he still eyeballs the pond from a neighbor fence at a distance but he doesn't even try for our yard now :P
Just do a search for "Scarecrow Motion Activated" on Google or Ebay, they sell them everywhere, I got mine at home depot..
Good luck.
BajaCapt.
