Zack Pond- beginner Can't Post

Hello everybody,

I was online in this forum last year April 2006 asking everybody how to build a koi pond.

My pond was built and ready end of the year when I move in.

I am happy to share with you the photo and design of the pond.

Currently I have in my pond
2x koi (14")
3x tiger koi (10") - just bought last week
10x koi (6-8")
2x Jelawat (8")
2x Kelah (6")
2x Tenggalang (5")
3x Lampang Merah (4")

It has been fun the first few months until this month. The fish were very friendly and swimming nicely in the beginning.

Until last month, I start to know about fish got flashing. I will post in a separate subject about my fish situation.

Pls have a look on my pond diagram, photos and fish.

Dear all,

Let me share with you the current situation of my fish.

1st week of May I realise about 2-3 of my fish are flashing. I dont know they were itchy. I thought they want to show off. Then I spoke to some shop, he advised me to put dimlin. Before that sometimes I saw some small red tail floating in the pond, I think it is anchor worm. (I thought it was fish shit)

So I put dimlin with 15kg of rock salt on May 9th then 1 week later I flush out the 2/3 of the water.
I didnt feed that much during the week.

After the new water, I add the Pond Prep from Kordon which is water purifier, detoxin etc. My fish look very happy and swimming nicely.

Then I was outstation and back 10days later on 27th May.

I realise there was not much flashing on the fish. Then last Friday 1st June I bougth 3 tiger Koi.

As the shop told me the koi is well treated in their pond, and he put some green chemical( I dont know what) in the plastic bag when I carried home.

Then the problem starts after new tiger koi are in. Nearly all the fish are flashing including the new ones.

Then on Saturday 2nd June I put 15kg salt again (maybe 20kg- I was going crazy a bit) and Formalin for half of the bottle of 473ml then at night i finish them all.

Yesterday, I change the 1/3 of the water thinking of it will be better. But today I still seeing 2-4 fish flashing. it may not all but still they are doing it.

I thought I want to do dimlin again. But let me ask the expert in this forum what their advise.

I check the ph is 8.5. no ammonia. I dont have nitrate test. My pond is around 3000litre.

Beside the flashing, I also realise the fish is under stress. They jump for food. They are more wild a bit. And the kelah is biting some of the koi lower back anal fin. I am not sure whether it is due to lack of feeding that they bite or they are stress because of the water or they become territorial and want to bite other.

So what do you think i should do on the flashing and this kelah problem?

Thanks
Rgds
Zack

Zack,
I'll give you my opinion. You will constantly battle illness and stress you gave a stocking of 24 fish if we just go an average of 6 inches per (which is way low) you have twelve FEET of fish in a 3000 liter pond (800 gallons to us unenlightened Americans) you are drastically overstocked even if the water is perfect your fish will always be stressed. in an 800 gallon pond you will only be able to stock 6-8 full grown Koi, full grown being relative as a koi won't reach full size in that small of a pond.
Thanks

Hello Longshot,

Thanks for the input.

Currently my fish is stable and doing fine. It is after 4 weeks and 4x of treatment with Dimlin.

Sometimes, as a new guy, you want to get the result quick. Since the parasite eggs hatches in multiple round of week so I was quite surprised that I had to fix this and change water, put dimlin every week for 4 wks.

I think my pond is quite big. It 4.4m x 1.1 x .8 meter with a v-shape bottom. The main pond is 3 ton and the filter is another 800 liter.

What is the usual rule of thumb for every feet of fish and liter of pond water.

I also realise other phenomenon with my KOI they now hit and run during eating.

I was thinking it may be due to other local fish like jelawat, kelah which are fast and doing hit and run during eating.

I realise Koi like to imitate other fish. At night some of them sleeping standing on the wall of the pond. This may be because they see the bandaraya fish which stick to the wall. And they imitate that.

What do you think? Should I separate other non-koi fish from my pond to tame back my KOi.
Thanks
Zack

Stocking rates are not set in stone and are affected by many things. In warmer climates the water cannot hold as much dissolved oxygen and so if you are drastically overstocked and the power goes out you lose fish. (Yes this happened to me) the other is your pond is very shallow and more susceptible to temperature fluctuations this stresses fish. Please remember that this is my opinion based on my experience, but I would not put more than five Koi in a pond that size and no other species at all. My former pond was 10' X 15' X 3.5' (3.5m X 4.5m X 1.2m) and I wound up scaling back to eight koi to alleviate stress issues in my pond. I turned the water over every hour and had a three stage filter. When I removed the overstocking problem my koi began to flourish. Water quality and Ph definitely affect how many fish you have. Remember slight overstocking only harms the quality of the koi, drastic overstocking affect the health and life of the koi. Those 10 inch koi are going to someday be 24 inch koi, keep that in mind as well. We all have the tendency to over stock our ponds and we and the fish pay the price in sickness and loss of enjoyment. If you are constantly fighting issues in the pond and not just sitting and staring into the water waiting for the multi colored jewel fish to come up and be seen you will burn out and quit. Ponds are for relaxation and enjoyment not to have something else to fight with in our ever more complex modern world.

Regards
LS

Thanks for the input for the overstocking.

Perhaps it time for me to segregate the fish between kois and others. We keep you posted when I got a temporary tank to do this.
