Mad Sure. We live out in the woods and never had bear that we knew of until this past year. That was one of the older cubs that had just broken away from a mama and her two cubs that had been coming around. The pond is right next to my house so I can't believe they feel too safe staying around for long. They drank out of the pond, however, I have a gator head in the pond and a sprayer pest control as well. Also the first stable step into the pond is pretty deep. I've never missed any koi due to bear, .... yet. I had a net last year over the pond but if a bear really wanted in the net wouldn't do it. It was more to keep flying pests away. I did not have a lot of faith in the gator head or sprayer but it appears they have worked for flying pests.Laugh My dog hates the gator head and every time it floats towards him his hair goes up. Gives him the willies. Of course if we hear the bear, which we have many times, we scare them away. I won't stand by and just let them get the idea that the pond is fair game. They'd have a brutal mama bear to have to face if I saw them trying to get my koi. It would be me or them. But I really don't think they want to take the drop off as a first step or just jump into the pond. It's 3 1/2 feet or more in places. Lowest place is 3 feet and the pump and airator is there and would hinder them or make them think twice. The koi have many places to hide in the pond, etc. (sometimes I hate). I am more concerned about it checking the debth out and ripping the lining which would cause me a real head ache, however, most of it is lined with rock. We stopped feeding the birds to get rid of the bear!!! It's all been a learning experience, I'd never thought I'd have to deal with bear! cuda

If I were you I would put up a electric fence around that pond, if the bear wants to go in the drop off is not going to stop him, there goes you liner and the koi. It would not be worth taking the chance for me. That way you wont have to worry if the bear touches the electric fence he wont come back to touch it again. I do love the wildlife around your pond but the bear, now thats a problem. The electric fence will not cost you near as much as it would to replace the liner and the koi, maybe around 50 buck for the electic fence if that much.

I am considering what you are saying about a fence. Infact, I think what I'll do is go to the nearest tractor supply place and ask them if they have any type of smell that would keep the bear away from the pond. i know they do for dear, fox, pets, and it may be that they have something for bear. The sprayer I have is alerted by motion and I believe has been a benefit. I will talk with them about electrical deterents and see what they can come up with too. thanks for the idea. We don't like the bears, coyote, or raccoons. We have them all and then some. But the only thing we have actually lost a Koi to is a large blue heron (that speared and took off with a 12" )and it is protected. But I have had no problems with them this year. The gator head is not pretty but it can be gotten use to. I do have a net that is on hand as well and permanent toggles around the pond to hook it up to without a lot of trouble. Whew, when I think about it, i've been through a lot these past couple of years. But it's worth it. I am in love with my Koi. cuda By the way Koifishgirl, my name is Judy too!

Hi Judy, I had a great blue heron attack last Sunday and he just about cleaned me out, the bird got a least 600 3" to 4 inch koi out of my mud pond. I want to kill the bird bad, but instead I will be putting fishing line in place to keep them out of my mudponds. If these bird were not in trouble I would not think twice about letting the mama in me come out and kill the darn bird.

The electric fence will keep the bear out but you need the net for the heron. I would hate to live where you do and have so many animals to deal with. I love my koi and would do all I could to keep them safe but you really have your hands full.

Frown You gotta be kidding me. that's awful!!!!!! I tell ya, I don't care if they are protected, I'd ping him if I could, if I caught him at my pond! Once they have incorporated your pond into their feeding territory it is really hard to get rid of them. I used weedeatter line before I got net. I wanted it to be able to see it and decide not to even land. I tell ya, the gator head worked with my heron after the net came off. 600 koi? you must have wonderful mud ponds. It's hard to take that kind of loss. Take care KFG.

I have been sick about this all week. I can tell you it takes time to get over something like this. I am raising koi to sell and the heron is a real pain. It cost a lot of money to raise these fish and I just love them and to have a bird come in and eat these fish well it hurts, these koi would have been someone's loved pets on day. I enjoyed so much seeing them at feeding time, I alway thought I had saw a new koi everytime I went out, just the colors coming in and made it look like it was one I had not noticed. It is hard work but also so much fun.Sly

Unsure post a pic of your pond. I'd love to see it. Really sorry about the small koi.
