mark 3 pond Can't Post

Hi, this is a pic of the third pond I have built, the first being a small preformed pond with fountain and one or two goldfish and the second made with a liner and green genie filter with several gold fish. The second pond can be seen as the smaller of the two in the pic and now forms the feed for the short water course into the larger. It also serves as a wildlife pond. The newest is approx 3.5mx2.5mx1m made from a liner with oase filtoclear 11000 and aquamax 8000 pump, which are working perfectly. I completed the pond in June of this year, it took about a week and a half armed with only a good shovel. I included a ledge most of the way round for aquatic plants and made it big enough to hold a reasonable collection of Koi (7 or 8). People thought would be well recieved, thanks.

congratulations! nice work.

always take into account that the Koi you're going to put in your pond will grow large and will occupy much more space than first required, unless of course you're planning to put mature koi already. and that's the prob i currently have in my pond. i'm overstacked. hope it doesn't happen to you.

Thanks for the thumbs up. What are the dimensions of your pond and how many fish do you have? Unfortunately I'm not in a financial position where I can buy mature fish and have bought young fish varying between 6-10 inches long. However my wife and I have enjoyed visiting all the aquatic centres in our area and choosing each fish individually. We now have 7 koi, do you think this is too many for a 6500 litre pond?

Nice work on your pond. A good shovel and a strong back can be a beautiful thingSmile. With a good filtering system up and running you should be able to handle about 1" koi per 10 gallons of water (according to koivet.com formula). That translates into roughly 200" koi in your pondShocked, so the size and numbers you are talking about should leave them plenty of room to growWink.

Hi, thanks for the positive comments, my back certainly didn't feel like a wonderful thing after all that digging, more like a clapped out aching thing. We have put a good selection of young Koi in the pond, I will let you know what they are later when I have my book to hand but there is definately a Shiro Bekko, an Asagi and a kohaku (not sure I've spelled that right). There are others too but their names escape me at present, each indivdually and lovingly selected from aquatic centers in my locality.

hey lampard having only a few quality Koi is better than having a lot of so-so fish. that's what the dealer always told me. But i never listened. i tried to buy bargain priced locally bred fish only to find out that they don't usually grow to be beautiful fish swimming about in your pond. and although after a while you get attached to the bastards, i'd still rather have only ten mature honest to goodness sakai bred authentic japanese living jewels.

I have an ten ton, or 10,000 liter pond carrying 23 fish, the smallest one being 9 inches already(w/c was not the size i got them 1.5 yrs ago) and the biggest roughly 26 inches last i measured. but the real problem lies in the fact that the filter space provided is around 200 liters. As a general rule, you'd want to provide 1/3 of the total volume of the pond to your filter. so, pond number two is already drafted and waiting to be built. but it will only be for the non japanese, not so nice koi placed there, so that the first pond will be a selection of all th koi i want to showcase.

in case you're wondring why i have so many fish in my pond, its bec i rescued a pond 1 1/5 to 2 years ago, owner left to migrate and the caretaker sold me the residents of the pond for a measley 20 usd. pond had 54 kois.

yo betsymax, 54 Koi for 20 usd, thats about 37cents each, no wonder you felt compelled to rescue them. I don't know if the koi I have bought are from Japan or not, I imagine they were bred in the UK but you never know. They are good looking fish though and have the potential to look impressive when fully grown. I currently have a shirro bekko, a yamabuki hariwake, a couple of ogons, a kinginrin kohaku, a asagi (could be an ai-goromo) and what I think is a pearl shusui, cost me about £140 in all. The biggest now being about 14" and the smallest about 6".

54 koi for 20 bucks is cheap, until i f ound out that the bastards had anchorworms and fishlice. tried to quarantine for a while for a couple of days in pails but the mortality rate was so high. So, i did the worst possible thing a Koi keeper could do, place a lot of them in my mature and parasite free pond. Lo and behold it turned out to be a major disaster. Although i was able to wipe the parasites out with Masoten, some of my more cherished Koi suffered from parasite wounds that made the hi or red in their bodies a bit blurry. and they will always be susceptible to further diseases and the like bec of that. luckily, the two best koi i have imho, have survived without a scratch, betsy and max, hence the name i use here on the forum.

one thing i learned from koikeeping is that there are only a few types that our japanese counterparts consider,um, more valuable, shall i say, than the other types. these are:

1. of course the kohaku
2. sanke
3. showa
4. shiro utsuri

you might wanna invest in those types in the future.

anyway, beauty lies in the eye of the koikeeper. Angelic

ps: you from UK, i love thre KOI magazine formerly koi ponds and gardens.
