mud ponds Can't Post

SmileHere is a couple of pics of my mud ponds, still not full of water but still running in. You can tell a little about them in these pics, the size of the four pond are 30 x 38 4 ffot deep, Still got a lot of pipe work to do, along with putting in a blower. I dont think the ponds will be ready for koi until next spring, but I am happy to be this far along.

Im in the pipe and water filling stage right now. Haveing a few problem with my well, had one of the ponds almost full and a switch went bad and caused me to loose about 3 foot of water. Out today in the rain trying to get problem fixed so I can get the ponds full of water. I wish I was rich, I could hire someone to help me with the problems that come up. Its going to take a while for the mud to get good and soggy and bind together before it will hold water, so I need the water to stay in the pond. I have had four ponds built like this and if all goes well and going to have three more built end of summer. I guess you could say I am lucky as I dont have a lot of bills to pay and can put my money in what I want to, plus I only had one child to raise so that helped.

    Hi, JudyCrazy
Indeed lucky for you to have a well and a big land to build mud ponds. So your water sources are mainly from the rain and well if I gather it correctly. Somehow, I am amused by the number of ponds you are going to have ie. 7 in total. I suppose the electric bill for running the 7 pumps is going to be expensive despite the fact water may be free for you. Equally amused is why do you need so many ponds unless you are in koi business given the fact that it is not easy to maintain the ponds. You may also need to have at least one to two helpers to run the ponds in order to maintain them to tip-top condition. Hope you can share with us more about your koi raising enthusiasm.
I am too inquisitive but hope not asking silly questionsCool.

    Hi,

Wow, dat big and dat many?? but the depth seem a bit shallow, Recommended depth is 5 ft of water for the koi to grow really large. How may kois do you want to keep or are you in the business of koi trading? A word of caution, kois in mud ponds tend to have a lot of problems with parasites and worms and predators. We have mud ponds of that size but we rear talapia for food.

    Interesting.

Hi KoiFun. I am trying to get into the business, so you are right that is why I am building so many ponds. Yes will be filling my ponds by a deep well, I will only have one blower to put air into each pond so my electric bill should not be that bad, If I can ever get them full of water and holding, since the ponds are new they are not holding water very good right now, its going to take time for the clay to bind together and hold water. I dont know how long this will take, but once this process finishes I should be able to keep them full using the well and rain water will help some in rainy times of the year. As for the depth of the ponds, these are fry ponds and hope I will not be keeping many of 6 inches so the depth is fine for this. If I should want to raise some larger I will build a larger and deeper pond. Its just at this time I dont think I will be raiseing that many koi over 6 inches.

I have five year goal set for me to finished my ponds and get everything ready to start selling koi. since I am not rich I cant go into full blast and really dont want to do that anyway as it will take most of the fun out of it for me and I will learn a lot by taking my time.

SmileI want 16 ponds but im not sure if I can do this. I think I am going to have to dig a few more wells to keep them full.Crazy I have two now but one does not produce very much water. I wish I had a back yard like this to, but it not my backyard, I have to drive about 10 miles to get to the farm.

One hour after the put the koi in the ponds they ate for me. I was kind of suprized after the long drive and move that they would even come to the top. The water is clear as I have not put anything in the ponds yet because I want to make sure that they are going to hold water for me ok.

The clay has not bonded yet so it is still seeping water. If I dont keep it running my pond drops fast. Have you any idea how long it takes for clay to become water tight?

You want 16 ponds, OMGShocked At least you have a farm. If I have a farm, I liive in the farm so I could make a lot of noiseTongue
You need at least a good week of rain to bond your clay. You want the surrounding clay to bond also. Once this happens you will still loose some water (normal seepage) to keep the sorrounding moist.Cool
Have you considered placing nets over your pond, just incase you get some HERON or EmuLaugh

lol I wish I could live with my koi. Yep ordering a net tonight if I can find what I want. the water has been in one of the ponds now for about a month. So maybe it wont be long before the clay bonds.

I put a few koi in the pond I think about 15 to 20 koi and going to grow them out and use for parent stock if they are any good. I got two momotaro Kohaku that I will be using and plan to get a pair of Sanke and Showa from Keirin Koi to use as partent stock. I want these to be momotaro koi only. Got to find me a good pair of Gin Matsuba and yamabuki Ogons for parent stock and then I will grow my own from their.
