Cool Thanks for the compliment Dr. Tan. Ur pond looks mighty fantastic too. U really have the R. Royce of a pond, what with Protein skimmer and Dechlorinator. The Yam trees in ur pond must be pretty lush now eh? One of mine just toppled after attaining almost 3meters. Wink

Oh and btw, love that Shiro Utsuri of yours. Now if only I could afford an Omosako shiro like yours... he he he. Wink

Hi Kev, thanks for the compliments too. Talking about the Yam plants...Unsure...I'm afraid only one of the original 3 are left in the waterway. The other 2 were not doing well and I had to tranfer them to my small garden. They are "recovering" now. The reason must be the lack of nitrates in the water. The other must be because I clean the waterway regularly. I find alot of debris everytime and I just flush them out. This may have affected the Yam plants growth. I can't stand the sight of debris accumulating in the waterway and I believe this may cause skin problems to the koi. So...Crazy....what to do! Plants or Koi? Answer is obvious! "Money" plant and Pandan causes less debris and I prefer them now. There's another shorter variety of Yam plant that is not doing too bad. Do you have a similar problem with your Yam plants? I find that there are no more than 4 green leaves in each Yam plant at any time. As soon as one new leaf is appearing, one old leaf would start turning yellow. Mad These plants are also easily toppled by strong wind. The Shiro is doing ok. Growing steadily and the white has become thicker and whiter. Not much change in Sumi pattern on it's head yet. Will post a picture of it if I can get a good angle for a shot. Smile

Hmmm, how do you get rid of the nitrates if not for the plants? I thought the plants were in there to get rid of the nitrates.... Well that's at least my understanding. My nitrate levels are low because we've got to clear out lotsa vegetation every now and then, plus the 2 trickle towers in the pond is supposedly to clear out nitrates too. I clean out the waterways about once every 3 months. Yes there's some mulm build up at the bottom, but not much and manageble.

Yah... there are never more than 3 green leaves on the yam tree at any one time. Constantly have to cut away the yellowing 4th leaf. Strange isn't it? Wink ... and yes, they do topple especially if you don't let them root tightly in your waterway. I also have 'Pengaga' and Veriegated Amazon Swords in my waterways. They grow really fast too. I like the greenery.... and the koi as well.

I have gold fish residing in my waterways (Ranchus). They seem to be thriving and if any problems with the mulm build up I would expect to see it first affecting the gold fish. So far, the skin, colour and growth of the gold fish are quite spectacular so everything must be ok. (I rotate those gold fish in my house aquarium with the ones in the waterways every 6 months.... R&R time for the goldies) Cool

cheers!
Kev

Hi Kevkoi / Dttk,

As far as I am aware water plants feed on Nitrates and minerals in the water. If you take out the nitrates from the water with a bio filter then your plants are not going to last very long. I have 3 lilly's in my 3,000 gal pond. They were thriving last year when I have a few problems with Nitrates and Ammonia, but since I installed a protien skimmer and a TT the levels are now at 0 and the plants don't want to grow.

Am I right in thinking that Koi ponds should be left "un-planted" ?

Hi Stuart, I should think that if hydroponics are used, a TT would deprive it of nitrates and the plants won't do well. But Kevkoi's plants are still thriving inspite of the TT. I really do not understand why Crazy. I don't have a TT and I noticed that nitrate level is lowest in the evenings and maximum in the mornings. I attribute this to maximum utilization of nitrates by plants in the day and less in the night. I love my plants and a little bit of nitrates at night won't hurt the koi that much I suppose. Crazy Any comments from Kev?

Aiyoh... now I dun know why but yes, my plants are growing and I am running 2 TT's (one 5ft tall and another 3 ft tall) at the same time. I guess maybe the by-product of the wet filtration is nitrates and from my last chamber the water is returned thru different places; some to the hydroponics, some to the TT's and some thru the venturis.... and there must be enuf nitrates getting to the plants. I do somehow get my amazon sword plant leaves and pengaga leaves in the waterway turning a little yellowish. (as compared to those growing in the soil). But the yellowing doesn't seem to be affecting the size and growth rate of the plants though. As for plantless koi pond.... errrr, I love my plant. Frown
