    Hi Jon,

Still trying to get the right angle to get rid of the reflection. it looks bigger than it looks bec I am using a wide angle lens. Its a 7,200 gallon pond 4 feet deep. the skimmer is on the middle right side. you can't really see it well.

yup, I am in manila. if you notice architectural design was the priority here. The back part where you see the wooden planks are the 3 chamber filter.

will post pic of filter chamber tomorrow

I am just starting out so am practicing on some tester kois to see if my system can handle the load.

if you notice the big one piece glass.... thats the kitchen nook where I have breakfast. I wanted a view while eating

I do need your advice thou. I want to rebuild my pond. I currently have a
1500 gallon pond. 28 inches deep only.

I want to build a 5000 gallon and I should do 6 feet deep.. BUT, what
if I dont want to do a 6 feet deep pond, what would you recommend I
    should go for?

my biggest problem is the limited amount of land in my property to
    build a bigger pond.

this is going to be my 3rd revision and I want ti to be final.

    HELP!!!

also I have heard of the momotaro bakki shower
(momotaro website) claiming that some people
just build a bottom drain, no settlement chamber or
optional settlement chamber and the pump sucks
water straight form the bottom drain to bakki shower.
eliminating the the chambers and produces clean
clear, no amonia, nitrite and nitrate..what do you think
of that set up? or should I go for the conventional system
    which is mechanical, biological chambers?

    help!
    the bakki shower.

    Hi mikoi,

You have to know how much space you can use in your areaSmile If you can't have 6ft deep have it at least 4ft and have a good lenght. A long pond will give koi good excersice which will improve growthCool The pond can be 2mWide x 10mLong x 1mDeep. this should give you 20tons or around 5300galWink

I don't have BH/BS but I read a lot about it. I know in Momotaro their BD's goes straight to BS. Most of the pics I've from Momotaro were indoor ponds so I assume they don't have to worry about leaves or dustWink But if I'm going to use the BH/BS in my pond I will still pump the water from a settlement chamber. Also for the BH/BS to work properly you'll need 10kg per ton and water turn over should be something around 5x per hour, daily 10% water change. So you have to consider the cost of BH($320AUSD/10kg), electricity, water bill if you are only planing to use BH/BS as your only filter only. Coventional filter are cheap but you'll need space to have a good filter surface area not like BH/BS, you only need a small area for the showerSmile

    Good luck manWink

    HI Jon,
Thanks for the reply. I didnt know that the turnover rate for the
bakki shower was 5x in an hour. yes, thats a lot of electricity
right there and not to mention 10% water change daily.

I think Im back to the conventional gravity fed filter.

Im not sure yet with the measurement. but I think I can go with
4 feet deep. 2 meters wide and 5 meters long.

    Will keep you updated.

    thanks

    Hi Mikoi,

I just remembered that you can also use BH as wet filter, same as Momotaro. The use both shower and wet filtersSmile But you still need space for the media and need lots of O2Wink

    Hi Lar,

Is still not bad at all mateWink Remember clear water doesn't mean good quality clean waterCrazyTongue More filters and mature filters should do the job. Adding TT beside the house with return as waterfalls(not necessary) will definitely help clearing and oxidising the waterSmile

    Jon,

my vortex, brush and filter chamber are 48 inch by 48 inch (1.21 x 1.21 meter). do you think it is undersized for a 7,200 gal tank or is my bio filter not mature yet? my 182 pieces 24 inch brush should be taking care of the algae?????? hmmm....is there a day I do not ponder about my pond? will take pic later of bio and brush and post tomorrow.

whats your take on the Hailea pumps? seems reasonably priced, but dont know how it will perform 4 feet down. I could not find any performance chart for this brand. wattage to liters seems ok if the rule is 0.8 liter/m per watt.

    Hi Lar,

My filter is same size as your filter but my pond is only a bit over 2,000g and for me its undersizeCrazy. Like they say if you think your filter is big enough double itWink I use to use brush as prefilter but no as biofilter due to minimal surface area. I know have jmatts only with 100L/m air pump. You need more biofilter, larger surface area is the way to go. I'm not implying that brush are no good but there are lots of media out there maybe cheaper with larger surface area for the good bacteria to colonizeSmile

I have a 60L/m Hailea pump I use for my BD diffuser which is 1.8m deep. It's working well, and for the price and running cost plus you can buy replacement diaphagm, can't complain. Smile

    Gday Jon,

I use the brush as a mechanical and the next chamber is the J mat. hmmm.... thats what happens when you follow the 1/3 rule pond to filter chamber, now I know better.

I feel the vortex is an inefficient area. I should convert it into the brush chamber and convert the brush into another J mat chamber.

cool, was at the shop earlier and was eyeing the pump, but decided to check the net first before buying. Is aerating the pond that critical?

    Hi Lar,

Let me see, water travels from BD => SC => brush => jmatt then back to pond, am I right???

Why did you say that you SC doesn't work, too much current, too shallowCrazy

From the pics you need more air in your jmatt. Water should look like its boilingWink and you brush are way too low. Part of the brush should be off the water level. This will help to trap more floating waste which is normally the use of brushesSmile A mature jmatt should look like golden brown, in your case with green jmatt, the matt should look a little dark greenCool

Sorry to ask but can you take a whole pic of filter system or maybe in order so we can see where is the flaw, specially with your SCWink

    Jon

thanks for your advise, will post pic tomorrow.

yes, bottom drain to vortex to brush to j mat. ok, I did not know that about the aeration.

The guy I got the dark green mat ran out so I had to get from a different source, explaining why I have 2 diff mats.
