pond pics by way of introduction Can't Post

Hi there,
I have been building this pond for about 2 years, roughly 1100 gallons, still a work in progress. plants have grown in a lot since the pics were taken and the fish are getting big. the oldest ones have made it through 2 Colorado winters. even had a few babies pop up last year. more info to come, but let me know what you think! thanks, Ed.

First a correction, that should say 11,000 gallons. makes a little differenceCrazy! all the filtration is up-gravel the smaller bog is about 8'in diameter and holds 1.5 tons of pea gravel and lots of plants with only about 6" of water above the gravel, the bigger bog is 12-13' roughly circular with 4 tons of pea gravel, lots of plants and the water is 2' above the gravel, I did this so I could separate the gold fish from the koi, they are all in this the big bog. My son and I chopped that big bog out of frozen soil so it would be ready this spring to provide more filtration and seprate the fish. I still need to get a 7500GPH pump for that bog but it hasn't been in the budget, I moved the 3000 GPH pump from the little bog to the big one, moved the1500GPH fountain pump to the little bog, 700gph spitter pump to the fountain and an old 300gph to the spitter. I also traded some of the bigger koi that were not developing the way I wanted for smaller but better quality ones. a bonus is that the fish load is lower until I get the bigger pump for the big bog and rotate the others back where they belong. The water is crystal clear and no sign of amonia, nitrite or nitrate so I gues the pumps are big enough for now. This whole thing has been experimental and I have learned bytrial and error, luckily there havent been too many errors, we have not lost any fish since the first year. Everybody lived through 2 winters even despite a power outage last winter that allowed the pond to freeze over completely. there is a lot more building to do including another pond/ bog/ stream system, more decking at different levels, outdoor kitchen etc. I have also convinced my wife that I need six permanent spawning/rearing ponds and an attached greenhouse, the spawning pond will have framework for plastic sides and a removable fiberglass roof so that I can greenhouse it all in for the winters. Most people I try to talk to about this little project just think I am crazy. hopefully some of the people hear share my insanity so I will have some one to discuss all of this with. Later, Ed.

Hello, my wife thinks I am crazy too!!! Nice to meet you! I have many ponds at my house and I am building one now, so we are up to 5, and I notice some people just say NICE and nothing more , so this is a hobby that either interests a person or not, my wife just says they look nice. I decided to take things to a new level, I decided to start a business building koi ponds and raising koi and lotus plants. that way I can share my crazy love with other crazy people!

Hello!

I am having a new pond built tomorrow.

Please help me with the basics.

Like the bottom should not be even, like the

center should be deeper that the other portions.

What else should I consider?

Thanks to all of you.

Hello, well the important thing to consider is the person making the pond, without a good understanding of koi keeping and pond will generaly be built incorrectly, some basics are the pond should be at least 3 feet deep, and if possible the bigger the better. There should NEVER be ANY rocks in the pond or at the edges where the koi can scrape themselves, ( many landscapres like the rock idea) and this is where one sees if they know about koi or not. And before anything try to plan the all the filtration system first, once cement is put into place it is hard to change things, so you have the bottom drain. the heart of the pond is the filtration and pump system, without this being well planned you are bound for some problems in the future. I would also question AND expect good in depth answers from the contractor about every aspect of what is being made or done during the construction. If he can not explaine things in an in depth way, this means he probabily does not know much about your needs in a koi pond. send me a photo and I can give you more indepth info about biofiltration and construction norms.
