Yes it will lower the length and width by eight feet. So the size of your pond should be about 16x4.

Ideally you should dig the whole pond out as preferred so you can then determine the size of the liner needed.

So, don't go and buy the liner until you've finalised your pond hole digging.

haha, i was thinking about doing this myself, glad to know i'm not crazy for considering it. EPDM pond liners are very expensive and i'd hate to buy one that's a foot too short in one dimension because i got too excited digging my pond!

in that line of thinking, how long would the pond be ok without a liner? seems like the best prices are online, which means maybe a week between the time the pond digging is done and the time the liner arrives (good time to put in a bottom drain, ha!), are there concerns about erosion from rain occurring in this time?

My advise is once you've done digging and still waiting for your liner or any material you will need to finish off
your pond is to place safety barriers or tape a meter away from the hole egde. You never know what's going
to happen when your not around.

SmileIf it rains very hard you will get some dirt that has moved from the side to the bottom of the pond but dont worry, it wont be that bad , just shovel it out and place the fabric and liner in the pond. You can alway lay a piece of plastic in the pond so you dont have that problem and then pump the water out after you get the liner.Wink

here is a link for a calculator http://gardensupermart.com/tips/calc.asp it tells you how big you need your liner and how many gallons it holds and more. i found it very useful. hope you do to. but yes i agree with mike and others dig the whole first. that is what i am going to do.
Thanks Marshall
