Dear Mr Khoobg,
In all fairness to the competition rules, I will now post the original photo as submission to the competition. The koi is measured at 58 cm in length.
Just a question for Khoobg. Are we allow to submit photo with more than one koi in the picture ?
Thank You.

Hi Thiamhwa and others,

Just a point to note and for others to consider.

I think the rule says no cosmetic enhancement using editing tools (or something like that). What I did mainly on your pix was to correct for poor exposure. It is akin to when we use to send in negatives to colour lab to make into prints. The technicians will find/correct the right exposure before printing prints. I would think cosmetic enhancement is when I remove the blemish on the spot on the koi head. If I want to make cosmetic enhancement, I use a scalpel. Darkening background and highlighting subject should not be termed cosmetic enhancement either.

In any case, this is a tricky situation that few can police. I think we need to understand the progress of digital photography before making sweeping statements about the use of editing tools.

cheers..

Hi Derrick,

Very nice, both. The shiroji is really looking good. Should really grow longer before throwing them into the deep ponds.

Cheers..

Hi GCSpyder,
Good point taken. I hope Khoobg could clarify the issue of enhancement on photos for the competition.
BTW, GCSpyder, thank you so much for your lastest imput on the photo. Will have it printed out to be
framed and displayed on my wall.
Best Regards.

Hi Thiamhwa,

hehe.. glad you like it. BTW, the resolution of your picture is too low for you to send for printing. It is only good for viewing on the web (through monitor). If you are really interested, drop me an pm and I will give you my email for you to send the original high resolution photo for enhancements.

Cheers..

HI.

It is best that everyone go without any enhancement. After, not all members can handle photoshop. In your case, I think what is more important is to take another picture from top view instead of the current front view. Koi best view is always from the top.

Hi Khoobg,
IMHO, I think a Koi Photo Contest means creativity in the photo image composition of the koi to capture/attract a person's eyes sight and not the typical bird-eye view pictures taken from the top which are usually used for koi competition magazines.
Thank you.

Hi GCSpyder,
Yes. I have set my resolution in the camera very low for the reason of emailing purposes.
Thank you to your offer for further enhancements to the photo. I have already printed out
a same size picture which is okey for display on the wall. As you can see, I am not a professional photographer and so a small little photo image is enough to keep me happy.
Thank you again.
Best Regards.

True in a way but in the case of our contest, we advice members to vote later base on:-

1) Comply with theme of contest for that particular month.
2) Quality of fish-shape, health, pattern/colour.
3) Quality of photograph, properly exposed, sharp, composition.

as described at This Thread

For Item 2, the fish shape and pattern is best view from the top.

Hi Khoobg,

Sorry, I have miss the part on Judging Criteria Guidelines. Now that I have been informed,
I guess I am just not qualify for this koi competition because :-

a) Item 1 - Being a beginner to this hobby, I do not and cannot afford to purchase any
show quality kois and so that certainly rule me out in this competition.
b) Item 3 - I only have in my possesion a cheap digital camera and so no point even hoping
that photos taken will turn out sharp and with high quality.

So, Good Luck to All who are taking part in this competition,
Best Regards.

Since I dont have any recent shots of my kois in my pond, I will submit my sakai kohaku which was 58cm in November still in Japan. If this is not allowed, it is ok , just another koi to look at lahWink

I'm with you, I think it's not to show off the koi as a person would do to win a showing, as it is to show off the art of photographing them, which can be hard and challenging in most circumstances.. Either way, I'm enjoying the pics...cuda

Hi Cuda,
Thanks for your view point on this topic. Like yourself, I thought a koi photo contest means the skillful and creative art of photographing the koi. Instead it is turning out to be just another high grade quality koi show competition which sadly, it is a contest which do not cater for all koi hobbyists in general.
Thank you for the encouragements, but without any show koi, so NO SHOW!
Best Regards,
ThiamHWa

Yes, maybe they will do such a category for people who like to photograph koi doing their thing. I would like that. ...cuda
