Is this a Coi Can't Post

I don't know where to post this. We was out fishing to day and cought this. We have seen it for years, but never been able to catch it. We didn't know what it was. It was hooked in the tail and fought for about 30 minutes. When we tried to weight it the scale maxed out at 50.10 lbs and then cut off. I just need to know if it's a coi. We put it back, and I'm sure i'll see him swimming around the next time i go down to the pound. Let me know.

Fins don't look right to be a Koi. Nor does the skin (not even for a doitsu) I think what you got there son is a big ol' albino catfish?

I know catfish. And thats what we thought that it was for a really long time. But I'm 100% sure that it's not a cat fish. I have some more pics along with some screen shots on my website www.mhawk.net there is no ads on it or anything to sell so I'm not trying to advertise here, but you can go there to check the pics out if you want.

Hi,

If I were to place a bet on it, I would go for an Albino Grass Carp, I have seen these to 24" and know they get bigger, whilst I was selecting Koi from Magnoy in Israel I spotted some Black carp (thats what they called them) they were over 48" long from what I can remember the body shape was very similar, as is the grass carps.

Damn big fish anyhow.

Doesn't look to be a Koi, but it could be a stunt double for one on TVCool! I don't know what it really is as all of the grass carp we have around here are scaled. There are suckerfish that have a similar body style, but most of them have spines on the head. Depending on how far north you are carp can get a lot bigger than that. Great lakes carp are notorious for going 80-100lb easily.Shocked

The museum says that it's a coi. They say that they can have the mouth of a catfish or a mouth like a koi. And they say that they lose their scales when they get old. Thats just what I have been told. So anybody wanting to buy a 60 lbs. old koi?

If I was you I would locate a local Koi Club and ask senior members there. They know more about Koi than Museum CuratorsWink. Since Koi can crossbreed with other species it is possible that one could have been placed in the waterway you caught this fish in and bred with a larger native carp species. I've never seen a Koi with a mouth even approaching the size of this fish which is why I'm so sceptical.

mhawk134...

Notice how the eyes are below the mouth? Looks like what you fished out of the water there...

They are call "Big-head Carp" which originate from Asia.... They are introduced to North America and post a big threat to the local fishes....as these Big-head Carp are good competitors for food....wiping out the other species....

I've tried them before.....lots of meat with rather big bones....but standard carp taste better.....hahahaTongue

Oh BTW, how or what is that figure sitting on the right side of the pic? The person or it looks kinda freaky.....Shocked

Sai Lo Mango...

Looks like that too.....catfish and carp are closely related...
however.....I still think that it is a bighead carp....because note how the back has a single pointy dorsal fin? But on your pic....there is not only one fin....Tongue

Re: [ahken] Is this a Coi [In reply to] Can't Post

in Vietnam i think they used to be call Basa Fish and human build an eco system that have like a portable toilet on the pier and the people do poopoo down the river where the fisherman tame those fish they tend to grow very big some even human can ride on them like a canoeBlush. I think they change name when into catfish when they import to the USA, in some part of the country in Vietnam one their best food is dive down their home portable toilet to catch them. one of my friend happen to be one of them, I have to said sory to him and tell him that have an un expected meeting and left quickly. Crazy but i hear some Univeristy in Mississippi test out the fish meat and said it even tasted 3 times better than the American Catfish. Because they are try sale it cheap and using name that familiar to people in the USA so i think fisherman industry in Vietnam get suited by US fisherman people big time over this reason caused American now enjoy this fish more cause their are much better tasting than American CatfishWink anyone try them before?
