Please Advise a Beginner Can't Post

We have just recently built a Koi pond and waterfall. Because the site for the pond wasn't shaded, we put a very large flat rock in one side of the bottom of the pond raised on smaller rocks to provide shelter from the hot sun. We are in the process of planting a tree and other plants to provide more shade. We put our Koi in four days ago and they have constantly stayed under the rock shelter in the daytime. We are up in the evenings until around 10:00 p.m. and we still cannot see them. Are they staying under the shelter because this is a new environment for them or what is the deal? We put the floating type food in there and it just floats into the skimmer. Any advice on getting them acclimated. I know they must be starving by now and I am concerned. Thanks!

Not sure the answer, but I am also a new pond owner, which is in full sun most of the day. My koi also were not eating or coming up to the surface to eat. I was told by my local pond-fish guy that they have been eating my plants which they are my plants look terrible but I was worried about my fish starving I bought the sinking type of food, they must be eatting it because my plants are starting to recover. I cant see them eat it because my pond linner is black and I bought darker colored koi not thinks and my pond is over 3.5 feet deep where they like to stay. My pond-fish guy informed me that they can find the sinking fish food and feed them at the same time every day until they get used to me. than I can feed them sinking and floating food to train them to eat from the top if I like. My koi are babies just 3 to 4 inches long if that and came from a very small tank to a about 1000 gal pond with 3 different depths. I hope this helps It helped me I also was very worried.

Thanks Twana for the info. About a day after my post, the Koi started coming out and now seem to be acclimating to their new home. You mention that your fish are babies. I think we have one just a bit older and is very small and it stays under the rock most of the time. The other four are out and about and really doing well.

Again, thanks for your response. You have been very helpful.
