500 gallon pond help Can't Post

Hello there. I have small 500 gallon pond that ranges from 18" deep to 36" deep with a Savio Skimmer and a Pondmaster 950 pump. I have 2 butterfly Koi at the moment and at most would add one more. I am looking into purchasing the pondmaster Bio-Matrix pressurized filter and a new pump. I do not currently have a water fall but may install a small one less then 2ft in height and will probably be an upflow filter/falls. The pipe run from the skimmer will be about 8 feet to the filter. I have been looking at the pondmaster HY drive 1600 pump but am wondering if that would be over-kill. However I could split it at the filter and create a direct return that would assist in moving the debri to my retro-bottom drain that runs into the skimmer. Any insight or ideas is greatly appreciated.

Still no input but as a follow up I am now cosidering the Savio Livingponds filter/falls rather then the pondmaster bio-matrix pressurized filter in case anyone has some input.

Hi Co_jim,

Sorry if I am too late here, but I'll give my 2 cents.
It doesn't look like you have anything that creates a current to move debris toward the skimmer or disturb the water to increase oxygen levels, unless you have returns that I don't see.
Because you have the skimmer at one end, I would recommend going with the filter/falls at the other end to create a current from the falls to the skimmer, thus enhancing the filtration and also increasing dissolved oxygen levels from the splashing action from the water fall.

Also, I have found that on smaller ponds that don't use bottom drains to remove debris from the bottom, an oversized pump helps. I currently have the pondmaster hydrive 4000gph pump on a 1,000 gallon pond, and a 2,000gph pump on a 150 gallon pond. Both with waterfalls creating a strong current to sweep debris to the other end of the pond.

So I think the hydrive 1,600 isn't overkill.

Re: [ouch] 500 gallon pond help [In reply to] Can't Post

I had a small falls at the other end but removed it a few weeks ago due to a crack (it was thin plastic home built). since then I had a direct return from the skimmer. I installed my new Savio Livingponds Falls this past week along with my water level shut off switch. The new pump arrives today. I have a retro bottom drain and the bottom is clean. I have decided either this year or next to redig. It won't be much of visual difference but I will go about foot wider and about a foot of average depth deeper to get a desired result of a total of about 1200 gallons.
