Advise : Revamping Koi Pond & Filteration Design Can't Post

Hi all,

Appreciate some advise for my koi pond as I am planning to completely re-work the whole pond as it is not serving me well. I am trying to achieve a clearwater pond which requires minimal management (possibly incorporate automated flushing, etc. if possible)

Background : Pretty much a self designed pond running for almost 3 years now. This a submersible pump fed pond filtered by a Oase Biotec 36 system. The size of this pond is about 3 feet depth pond with a total volume of 8,000 litre (last estimated measurement). The whole floor is flat throughout the pond so debris on the floor does not move much. Also now that my kois have grown, the walkway cement pillars at the side of the pond is too small of a squeeze for them to move in and out comfortably. In terms of the water quality, no green water issue but definitely lots of algae buildup on the pond walls due to its exposure to the afternoon sun (kois somehow like eating them off the walls). There is no water skimming filteration plus water change is pretty much manual.

Thoughts :
1. To completely remove the cement pillars at the side and have a single cast walkway over the pond so is no more pillars inside the pond.
2. Have a bottom drain system from the main section of the pond ? ( I can't dig deeper for the pond as a whole..pipes running under..but I can do with some areas going lower)
3. Filteration system -> I'm completely puzzled to how I can fix/design this one...was thinking to reverse the flow of my pond from outward to inward if it helps.

I'll post some photos below and the layout.

Please do let me know if additional specific details are required. I'd be more than happy to provide.

Regards

Hi,

My comments:
  • Taking out the concrete block is the first one, I will do. U will gain more space and volume.
  • The shape of the pond is good with lots of swimming space. Koi needs space to swim to get good body shape.
  • 3 fts depth is too shallow to grow koi to hv good body shape. Linked to
  • The bottom drain. To hv more depth and bottom drain go together. If you build bottom drain without dig down or put more edge height, u will end up with more shallow. From your picture, dig down is prefered.
  • If you hv constraint to dig down, therefore doing bottom drain beside the filter is another alternative. Also, do a small slope from the far end. Pouring water or put another pump with jet from the far end to let debris moving to your bottom drain.
  • If your filtrating is not enogh, you'r better put the remote filter like drum filter.

Cheers,

Hi Tan,

I have the following questions which may hopefully help to better understand your koi pond design layout:-

1) Overall length and width dimensions of the pond.

2) What is the usage of the internal space over looking to the timber deck area. It it a dinner or
lounge area?

3)What is the internal space with the projected 3'0" high bay window?

4)Where is your favourite spot by the pond when spending time viewing the koi? It is not shown in the photos.

5)Which end of the pond is closer to the nearest public drain? Is the depth of the external public drain
deep or shallow? Need to know whether the pond's waste product outlet discharge pipe can be connected to it.

6)You may have a 3'0" deep pond but it seem to me that the actual water level is only between 1'6" to 2'0" high.
Is it possible to raise the water level? If not, you will most likely end up with big belly koi and poor body shape.
If you notice, some of the koi shown in the photo are already heading towards that direction.

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa

Hi,
I would like to offer some suggestion for you to consider.

1. Convert the area below the wooden deck into filter chambles.
2. Change the pump feed filter to gravity feed which normally works better for bigger pond.
3. Place the UV after the filter. UV will be more effective as the filtered water is cleaner.
4. Return the water at the far end of the pond to ensure no dead spot. (You can also place a few wavemaker to push the debris towards the filter inlet.

You need to dig a hole at the bottom where the water goes into the filtration chambles.
