Aeration in filters Can't Post

Thanks cch for the tip. I will go and get the powder in Cheras. I read recently that aeration is not such a good idea in a filter because it disturbs the beneficial bacteria. Is there any truth in that? It seems if there is enough oxygen for the fish, there should be enough for the bacteria so there's no need to have aeration in the filter as well.

Cheers
Ben

Hi Ben,

Aeration is infact important for your bio filter. Your KOI need oxygen and your aerobic bacteria too need a lot of oxygen and it is for this reason that your bio filter need to be heavily aerated.

Heavy aeration in filter wil promote the grow of bacteria and will increase the efficiency of your bio filter. Having said that, the bacteria is still somehow dependent on the KOI for the constant food supply. They need the KOI waste to survive. So if you keep small number of KOI in the pond, you filter may not be required to be aerated at all as your main pond aeration may be sufficient.

Aeration will not disturb the aerobic bacteria.

Thanks Khoo. I will put an airstone in the filter as well. I fear I have too many Koi already. My pond is only 700 Imp gallons and I already have 15 koi ranging from 4 to 15 inches. But there is a waterfall and three venturi type outlets along the walls of the pond, so there's plenty of aeration. I got most of my koi from UCP and Zen Gardens. Have you seen the new arrivals at UCP? Fabulous!!!!!!! But a bit dear!
Cheers
