Hi Ben, Aeration is infact important for your bio filter. Your KOI need oxygen and your aerobic bacteria too need a lot of oxygen and it is for this reason that your bio filter need to be heavily aerated. Heavy aeration in filter wil promote the grow of bacteria and will increase the efficiency of your bio filter. Having said that, the bacteria is still somehow dependent on the KOI for the constant food supply. They need the KOI waste to survive. So if you keep small number of KOI in the pond, you filter may not be required to be aerated at all as your main pond aeration may be sufficient. Aeration will not disturb the aerobic bacteria.
