Aquarium? Can't Post

I have an aquarium and will be makign a pond in the spring but as of right now i have a 20 gallon aquarium with 5 kois. So i change my water like every 2 weeks or so and i have to keep refilling it with fresh water (drinking water) and that is going to raise my water bill. Can i jsut use tap water (sink water) instead? Do i have to use a chloride thingy to clear the tap water? Or do i have to keep refilling it halfway with drinking water...

20 gallons is way too small for koi. They will outgrow it too quickly but for when your pond is built...

In my area tap water is better for my koi than my drinking water. My tap water is harder and has a better ph than the soft acidic drinking water. You can buy test strips to determine which is best. You can always alter the tap water even if it isn't ideal. This is a lot cheaper in the long run (than using drinking water) remember to treat it for chlorine before adding it to your pond!

You will want to test the water the koi are living in to make sure it is free of ammonia and the ph is high enough. I would also recommend you add some aquarium salt. Remember that koi are very very dirty fish as they have no stomachs. Plan for plenty of filtration!

I'm not sure I understand this part of your post.
What is the difference between drinking water and tap water?
Should not the water taken from the kitchen tap be good enough to drink?

Hi Skibur,
You need a basic filtering system to support your aquarium.
You can visit my website on how to set-up the filtering system.

Cheers!

Hi,

It is no need and too costly to use drinking water. Drinking water from reverse osmosis is lacking of mineral (so purified). There are 4 ways of handle this kind of thing.

1. Use rasin filter. This kind of filter absorbs chorinate substance.

2. Instead of directly put the tap water to your pond, put it somewhere likes reservoir. For example, 200 ltrs drum. Let water stagnant for more than 24 hrs. the chlorine will go away and can be refilled your pond.

3. In case of emergency and need to do water change, you better hv. dechlorinate agent. Or you can use Sodium Thiosulfate 1 g. per 290 ltrs of water pond.

4. Revamp your pond to be larger. The large volume of pond can cope with small amount of chlorine.
