Bacteria in Filter Can't Post

Hello everyone,

At times, there is a need to drain water in my pond and filter for cleaning. As the filling up of water require many hours for big ponds, I just wonder how long can the bacteria in the bio filter is able to survive without pond water. i.e. How long can they last by taking oxygen from the air.

Hi James
Nitrifying bact. living in the filter media could last from anything from 2 hrs to 10hrs or more. It all depends on 2 things:
1. The type of media
2. Where do you put your media after moving them out of the filter box? (eg. 6 ~ 8 hrs if I leave the nylon media in my Q-tank with pond water.)

Hello Mark,

Water was drained from the filter and basically the bacteria only exposed to air. Filter medium is green matting.

Thanks

My bacteria beds live extremely well in the air on the media for 20 regularly when the media is out of the water during my PP treatments. So the bacteria will live well in the air for at least 20 hours.
