Bead filter Can't Post

Re did my pond last spring. Went from 700 gallons to 2500 gallons and installed a Triton bead filter with a two horse power pump. Got a call from my local power company thanking me for my business!
My question is this, does a bead filter have to run 24/7? I was told that if I turn it off for an any amount of time, the bacteria will die. any truth to this?

Why are you running such a high hp pump? My pond is almost 4000 gallons and
I'm running aqua bead filter on a 1/3 horse pump. The pump is from wonderflow
and rated about 5700 gph. You should be o.k. with a much lower hp pump like
1/3 or 1/4 horse.

2 HP!!! The operating cost on that thing must be rough. We have a high head 3/4 hp pump that moves 8500gph, but we have multiple water falls and a long stream going too. I'd be looking for a much lower hp pump that can handle the head/volume you need. It will save you a lot of money every month.
As to the filter, ANY type of biofilter will suffer a major die off if it is down for very long as the bacteria need a constant supply of water and nutrients. Shut it down over night and it will smell like dead fish and stale poop when you start it up in the morning.

THANKS TO BOTH OF YOU FOR YOUR HELP!
ONLY ONE OTHER THING I SHOULD MENTION, THE POND IS ABOUT 30 FEET FROM THE FILTER AND WE'RE USING 2" PVC FLEXABLE HOSE.
NOW I'LL HAVE TO SEE IF I CAN MATCH UP A LOWER HP MOTOR TO THE PUMP.
I BET THIS THING IS COSTING ME $200/MONTH FOR ELECTRIC!
THANKS AGAIN

Donald, I'm using 2" inch flexible and 2" inch hard plastic pvc for
my pond and I'm paying about $30-35 dollars for electric/month.

I'm moving water through 2 filters, and one of them is at the head of a stream 70' from the pump... 2hp is way over the top for a pond your size. You should be able to reduce your HP by at least 50-75% and still have plenty of volume.
Do a little checking around for pumps with high head/volume ratings in the 1/2-3/4 hp range that match up with your filter.
You might also want to consider installing 3" pipe instead of 2". It will reduce your head loss by nearly 50%.
