Building a Pond Can't Post

Hi All,

I have just been registered as a new user in this forum, and I happen to have some questions which you expert Koi keepers out there might help me with.

Here's the scenario. I haven't actually started out on Koi keeping yet, but am planning to do so pretty soon. The problem I have now is space constraint. The size of the pond I might be able to build is only 9ft X 5ft and probably 4 ft deep. Is this too small for keeping koi successfully? (Not that I am into koi competition, it's just for a hobby)Here are some of the other questions I have in mind :

1. With this size pond, how many koi can I keep, and what size koi?
2. What kind of filter to use, what size, what kind of filter media?
3. What motor to use?
4. Is it advisable to have a bottom drain for this small size pond?
5. What about water changing? I read that frequent water change is necessary. If so, do I need another tank just to store water(quarentine) as I am sure you can't use water directly from the tap?

That's all the basic questions I have to start with and hopefully you guys out there might be able to provide me with a solution.

thanks
kenny

Hi Kenny,

Is 9 x 5 x 4' depth is all you have for pond and filter combined or you have additional space for filter ?

Hello Kenny,

1) The number of koi will largely depend on the size and the efficiency of your filter to keep the water clean. Try to build a large filter. While the rule say that the filter size must be at least 30% of the pond surface area, if the situation allow, build a bigger one.

2) As far as possible, you should adopt standard filter design that must consist of a sendimentation chamber + boilogical filter + trickle filter. You can use Izekinet for the sendimentation chamber. For the biological filter, use green matting. For the trickle filter, use bioball.

3) Use submersible pump that is economical. There are so many type of submersible pump in the market that do the same job but consumable different amount of electricity. check the wattage before you purchase. A good submersible pump from Japan with two inch outlet will consume 150 watt of electricity.

4) It is definitely advisible to have bottom drain. In addition, you must also design your sendiment chamber so that fish waste can be flush out from the system easily.

5) Weekly water change of 20% is strongly recommended with the purpose of reducing nitrate from the system. If possible, install carbon column or "dechlorination chamber" to treat your incoming water before introducing the water to the pond.

Hope the above help Smile
