Building a filter Can't Post

I am currently thinking about building a filter to replace my existing sand filter.
First off I would like to ask if a sand filter is a adequate filter for a koi pon?
The volume of my pond is .400 gallons, outdoor, with 20 medium sized koi ranging in size from 9-13 inches.
I currently have several pumps and a uv lamp.
My second question is how often do I have to change the bulb of the lamp, and how fast should the water be traveling thru the tube to be most effective?
Finally I would appreciate any information in how to build a simple but effective filtration system, and advice on what materials to stay away from, such as volcanic lava chips and coral, and what materials would be most beneficial.

P.S. Love the site, great information, great people.

Regards
LEE

Hi LEE,

Welcome to the forum.

Sand filter will works only as mechanical filter and it will not perform much biological function at all. Sand filter should always be used, if wish to install one, at the last stage of the filtration system with the objective of polishing the water before it returns to the pond.

To achieve biological actitivies, you need to have filter compartment that more often is fill with synthetic green matting that can be easily colonized by nitrifying bacteria. The successful colonization of bacteria in such filter is crucial in the successful keeping of koi in your pond.

As for the use of coral chips, there are more con than pro and hence not advisible to use it. Read more at this thread http://www.koi.com.my/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000029.html
