Charcoal??? Can't Post

In the filter system of my new pond, charcoal was added as a filter medium by the contractor. He told me that other contractors use charcoal as well, but I was told by a koi dealer that charcoal is extremely harmful to the system. Can some one advice me whether to remove them? It will be quite troublesome cos it is added in large amount. If not, what other material is cheap and good?

This new pond is not sheltered and so the water is full of algae(green!!!). I have some kois in it for about 2 months and they are so far still growing fine. I have not yet tested the water. However, I do perform partcial water change at times.

Charcoal??? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Marcus,
Charcoal is another aquarium-friendly product that Koi keepers have been told would advantageous.
This has been proven incorrect since they only function for short period of time, and they do not convert amnmonia, they absorb it.
Once saturated Charcoal products need to be recharge.
Some hobbist a being advised to use charcoal in conjunction witht their bio-filters as a safe guard against ammonia build up.
Think about this. When charcoal absorbs ammonia,it deprives the aerobic bacteria colony of nutrition that would increase the colony's growd.
Therefore, when the charcoal becomes saturated and can no longer absorb any ammonia, the entire ammonia load is immediately passed to the bio-filter that has no colognised to the point where it is able to convert extra load of ammonia.
It may be okay to start off with at for one month before the rest of your bio-filter can handle the job.And then get rid of it,
The best thing is to get a proper filter material. As the contractor is just making money out of it and you have the work.
Regards,
Hans

Charcoal??? [In reply to] Can't Post

I was told by the so-call expect who had built the lousy ponds for me to use charcoal in the filter.

I have tried using charcoal as the filter media. However, it was difficult to maintain especially when cleaning the filter. Further to that the charcoal will be broken into smaller pieces after few weeks in the water.

I have taken out all the charcoal from the filter and replace with syntetic green matting.
