Hi Marcus, Charcoal is another aquarium-friendly product that Koi keepers have been told would advantageous. This has been proven incorrect since they only function for short period of time, and they do not convert amnmonia, they absorb it. Once saturated Charcoal products need to be recharge. Some hobbist a being advised to use charcoal in conjunction witht their bio-filters as a safe guard against ammonia build up. Think about this. When charcoal absorbs ammonia,it deprives the aerobic bacteria colony of nutrition that would increase the colony's growd. Therefore, when the charcoal becomes saturated and can no longer absorb any ammonia, the entire ammonia load is immediately passed to the bio-filter that has no colognised to the point where it is able to convert extra load of ammonia. It may be okay to start off with at for one month before the rest of your bio-filter can handle the job.And then get rid of it, The best thing is to get a proper filter material. As the contractor is just making money out of it and you have the work. Regards, Hans
