Cheap Tancho Can't Post

I must say this is a very quiet forum compared to the discus one I subscribe to! I get over 50 messages in my email from that list!

Anyways, I bought an awfully cheap 10 inch Tancho today with a good milky white body and a perfectly symmetrical heart shaped red marking. Perfect in every way except the belly is quite fat! Is it pregnant or is that a defect? Worse still, can it be harbouring tapeworms? It's not dropsy I suppose as the scales and eyes are quite normal. Hope you can help.

Hi Ben, so you think you got a good deal from your recent purchase? It seems like your Tancho has a round and protruding belly which for koi standards is not good. Maybe that's why it was sold cheap. It could be a female. I guess it's not mature yet since it's only about 10 inches long. To improve it's body shape, I suggest you have enough space (especially depth) in your pond for it to exercise and hopefully in a year or two the other parts of the body would have developed properly and the belly will not be too prominent. Of course fish food high in protein is also important for the muscles to develope fully.

Hi dttk! Thanks for the tip. No I didn't think I got a great bargain! Even with my little experience, I can tell its body shape isn't exactly award winning. But it's still a pretty Tancho. My pond is only 30 inches deep and unfortunately there's nothing I can do about it now. Oh well, maybe it will get slimmer in time!
Cheers
Ben
