Choice of 1st filter, filter material

Have an old Diogneous (spelling error) swimming pool Filter!... I am currently using one (gutted as to all the 'nylon' covered filtering elements) full of Bio-balls as the second in-line nitrate filter....
Intend to replace the current swimming pool cartridage filter (no cartridage, modified for material filtering) with another Diogeous filter...
I have, on hand, bird netting (1/2" squares), some white 1/2: filter material (think is is K1????), and some 2' simular material(doesn't flex as the white 1/2" material)...
What should I use as the filterning material for the first filter... all, some ...???? Or other product...
I am replacing the current filter to gain the 'back-wash' advantage which is a great feature to have...
Suggestions please!!
