Current for better bodies? Can't Post

How do you guys feel about having a very strong pump to circulate water to create current for the sole purpose of building stronger bodies and then having this system a timer for say on: 6 hours per day and off 18 hours per day. Say the pump is right next to the pond. Pros and cons of this school of thought?

Hi Ernst,

I have a decent current running through my pond 24 hours a day. It also helps clear the dirt on the pond bottom. The koi will know how to find a spot of relative calm when they want to rest. Normally they enjoy swimming against the current since they are evolved from riverine carp..Smile

Cheers,
Paul

Thats what I'm doing at the moment, the returning water by itself is already creating continous current but I also have another pump on a timer which helps to create a stronger current especially at the bottom. This comes on intermittently for an hour each time throughout the daytime.

I've had a current pump on a timer for a year now and I have to admit that most of my koi have really good body confirmation. Whether is genetics or pond setup I don't know. I currently run mine for 3 hours in the morning with a 2 hour 'rest' and then 3 hours in the afternoon. They never spook when the pump starts up and they become a lot more active in the current. I've got two questions regarding this technique:
1. The stagnant water in the pipe when the pump is not working, is there any threat to the koi because of this? pump is right next to the pond with a relatively short lenght of pipe.
2. Does it not make sense to have them 'train' for a portion of the day and then rest so they can convert the food into body mass instead of using all the food for energy to swim against the current 24hours of the day? I don't really have an area in the pond where they can rest if they should decide to...rectangular pond with large volume of water comming over through my waterfall.
