Do shallow pond does the work? Can't Post

1)I have a funny size pond which can only top up to a max. water level of 22". May question is since experts of koi fish recommends a min. of 5' then would my koi fish be exposed to any great danger? Will they die? I have 32 Kois swiming around in the pond for about 5 days now. Please advise before it is too late
2)How can I go about designing a good water filtering system? My pond has already been build in my grandpa's time. So I can't use the correct way like the one introduced by Koi Malaysia's Experts. At the present time I have a filter above the pond and I don't think it is a good system.(I have not heard of Koi Malaysia during the stage of building the water filter system.)
p/s . If you need the detail & Picture of the pond & the filtering system I can send you a Document which consist all of them. You just have to let me know you email address. Thanks!

Hi! Khoo,

You should be able to received my file by now.
I was at Melaka yesterday and the fish shop owner recomended me to use Coral instead of Anti Ammonia Stones! Now I am really confused. Right after I came home I was on line and reading this forum and I saw the "coral" topic. What stuff should I used in my filtering system other then corals? I think I need your receipy ASAP coz I wanted to buy a filter box and I have not decided which to buy yet... For my fitler I want to do a one time spending dispite the maintanance. So please advise! Thank you!
I think it is quite urgent now although there is no fish dying up til this extent but I can see the water colour has changed to a little bit milky & can see bubbles floating on the pond. I don't know if what I did today is correct... I top up the water in the pond to about 4" and I also include some anti chlorine to it. After 3 hours my fish is still active & see signs of hungry. If this is a normal situation... could you please explain?

Thanks Khoo!

Rdgs,
Lenny

Khoo,
I am looking for a some reading materials to improve my knowledge in Keeping Kois and I saw one which is called "Koi Kichi by Peter Waddington" which was recomended by MKC on the front page of MKC. Now, it that book worth buying it? It is about US$100+ and it is not a small amount of money to start with & the question is, "is that a good book?" I don't trust the statistic shown in Amazon... I think I trust you more! :">
Well, I am about to go shop for a bigger & more proper fitler box and also filters tomorrow. and I have estimated a project funds of roughly RM$1,000.00 for the filtering system and I hope to get a reply tonight if I don't take too much of your time which I would like to appologies first. :">
Anyway... I am from a small town call Tampin and it is quite difficult for me to get certain materials for rearing Koi fish. If you have any shops in KL that you would recomend to me please let me know... I might come to KL the day after if I can't find what I want in Melaka tomorrow.
Best Rgds,
Lenny

Hi Lenny,

It is better to use green matting as filter media. Please read this thread for some disadvantage of using coral http://www.koi.com.my/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000029.html

Have you received the email I sent you earlier today? I hope you have coz I am waiting for your pro comments.
I still don't quite sure about how to get the filtering system done so please let me know what to put in the 1st 2nd 3rd 4th chamber please. Thks!

Khoo,

I have got my new filtering system now & this is my description of my filter setting:-
1st Chamber - Brush
2nd Chamber - Synthetic Mat
3rd Chamber - Blue and white Mat
4th Chamber - Corals and Charcoal

I know you don't like the idea of using Coral... What do you think I should used then? I tried asking the dealer abotu Zerolite but I he doesn't know what it was!

Waiting for your reply...

Rgds,
Lenny

Hi Lenny,

If you keep coral in the last chamber, that is not too bad at all as water that pass through the first three chambers is already quite clean. Hence the chances of dirt get stuck in the coral is very much reduced. Putting coral in last chamber will help to buffer against pH change.

You may wish to use zeolite for the initial stage before the filter get matured. You can use zeolite if you do not mind to recharge zeolite from time to time. However try not to rely too much on zeolite, if possible let the bio filter do all the job naturally.

As for the 3rd chamber, you may also wish to use green synthetic matting.

Cheers

Hi Lenny,

With a 22" depth, your koi will still live there well except that they may not be able to grow very big.

Khoo,

thanks for your advise... I don't think my Kois will get bigger like what I have seen ni the members photos coz mine are not the imported once (if I that is true Smile)
Anyway... I am not very happy with my pond and I won't be able to make my own pond until I move in to my own house Smile But I will try my very best to grow these babies and provide them the best accomodation. It is a challenge for me! I always believe in "positive thinking" and I hope all the Koi members in the world could treat them like their own child instead of "pet". I don't know why... but I felt something special aboiut these Kois.. and they don't look like fish... somehow I felt they look like humans too... especially when you look into their face. Anyway, That's about it!
Khoo... please look into this http://www.koi.com.my/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000035.html
I will send you another set of photos tomorrow!
Lenny

Hi Lenny,

Reference is made to your email.

Trickle filter should preferably filled with bio ball and let the water to flow down slowly. If sand is used as a medium, then the filter will act mechanically. If you wish to use a mechanical filter, then sand filter that has backwash facility will be a better choice. Without the backwash facility, it will be very difficult and trouble to wash the sand.

Hi Lenny
Clear water does not mean trouble free.
If you could decribes alittle about your dead koi will also be helpful- wounds, reddness, scales, eyes and behaviour before they die.
In the meantime, please test your water for pH, ammonia and nitrites and post your readings asap.

These are the baseline for your ref.:
pH betw 7.0 ~ 8.5
ammonia and nitrites zero.

Good luck.

Mark,
Scales from my dead kois are a part from its body and that is about it... Frown I think the eyes is a bit white... is it normal if the fish die and have white eyes?
pH - 7.6, Ammonia - Undifined, NO2 - 0.025
I can't define the ammonia level coz I don't think I have the right colour reading from my JBL ammonia tester kit. The colour is brown instead of green like the colour shown in the ammonia colour chart! I have requested from the dealer I bought it from but they told me they don't know how to use it! I was pist with their attitude and I don't think I will go back to them anymore!
Please advise!

Mark,
Is it ok for me to mixed goldfish in my koi pond? I have 12 of them in there and they are the prox. 3-4" Would the goldfish produce higher ammonia level then the kois do?
