Do you have answers to these? Can't Post

Hello to everyone!

I have a few questions.

Why do we have to put stones on the bottom of the pond?

I surmise that it can help in the filtration? But I'm not quite sure.

My pond does not have stones.

Also why do we have to put stones inside the filtration box?

Thanks to all!

Hi there
Most of the experienced koi keepers will tell you not to put stones on the bottom of the pond. They can trap sludge and dead material that is not good for your water clarity. Also if your pond has a bottom drain it is definitly not advisable to put rocks on the bottom as some smaller rocks may go down the drain and cause blockages, also i imagine that the rocks will reduce the flow rate down the bottom drain compared to a flat or slightly banked pond bottom.
The only stones that i am aware of that go in filtration systems are lava rock. These have a good surface area to allow bacteria to colonise in biological filtration. They are also much cheaper than other alternatives.
Hope this helps

However, bioballs have a surface area (from experience) and are suited to trickle tower applications.

I use to have stones at the bottom when I was a beginner. After I removed them, I found a big slurry of a mess at the bottom.

If anyone tells you to use them, they are most likely amateurs in koi keeping.
