Drain pipe sealed by cement Can't Post

Hi,

I have a 4 chambers fiber filter system. The first chamber contains brushes and matting. The second chamber contains ceramic chips and matting as a base. The third chamber contains coral and zeolite stones with matting as a base. The last chamber is where the water flows down to a DIY trickle filter to the pump which pumps the water to the fiber tank.

The problem is the Drain pipe. Each chamber has a pvc pipe leading to a drainage chamber. However, my drainage chamber was sealed by cement.

Is there a way whereby I can still continue to flushed out the dirts settlement from each chamber without destroying or distrubing the good bugs in the bio-chamber ?

Dear clementi, I'm not very clear abt the following, "....last chamber is where the water flows down to a DIY trickle filter to the pump which pumps the water to the fiber tank." I take it to mean that water from the trickle filter goes to the pond. Then pond water goes to 1st chamber via the pump. I hope I'm correct upto here. Does all the drainpipes from the chambers drain into a common drainage chamber? I'm also not clear abt the following, "...my drainage chamber was sealed by cement." (1)Does the drainage chamber have an outlet? If so, is it sealed? OR do you mean to say that (2)the inlets are sealed? If (1)is true, then the drainpipes are still working. Just plug-up the inlets and suck out the waste from the common drainage chamber. If (2) is true, the drainpipes are useless. Will have to approach the problem from the chamber itself. Can't totally avoid disturbing the media. A siphon may help.

It is difficult to describe without diagram. But I want to focus on the siphoning of the water.

I tried siphoning and realised that the pressure is not strong enough and fast enough to pump out much waste.

Being impatient, I took out my bio-filters and put the pump at the based of the chamber and pump it out. It was very effective but it may be a mistake. I ended up cleaning the tank because the water in the main tank turned very murky after a few hours. What could be wrong ? Frown

Is there a way whereby we can just target to clean in the filter the unwanted waste ( are those waste dirty brown in colour and also smell ?). [confused]

Hi Clementi, it's easy to explain why the main tank water became murky. This is because as soon as you remove the pump which was attached to the inlet to the 1st chamber, some of the dirt backflowed thru the inlet and out into the main tank. You should have plugged-up the inlet before removing the pump. Smile There is a type of siphon that is quite effective in removing waste. It has a 'hand-pump' that allows you to create a suction force that sucks up water instead of having to use the mouth. They are sold in most aquarium shops. If this is still not good enough, try getting a small aquarium-type powerhead that you can always use for cleaning the filter instead of detaching the main pump each time. The waste that has accumulated at the bottom of the chambers are dark brown in colour and has a slight odour of rotten egg. Smile
