Experiences in Koi population Can't Post

Hi,

I am new to this site but is impressed with the discussions.

I have a couple of questions perhaps some of you may be able to advise.

I have a 4.5 tons FG pond with a 1.5 tons filter (brush, mat and corals) for just over 6 months now. Normal updown filter without vortex. Water has been good generally, but occasionally fish flick due to spike in ammonium/nitrite (last this couple of days - heartbreaking). I would normally change out some water, add salt, add bacteria, increase aeration, reduce feeding and this would normally work. Otherwise kois seems to be having a wonderful time.

I currently have 16 Kois from 20cm to 55cm and have been wanting to add more but afraid of overloading the pond. Can you share with me your experience in populating ponds? I read somewhere the rule fo thumb is 100 inches of fish per 100 gallons. Any experiences with larger population?

I guess I am trying to find ways to maximise my carrying capacity with my current setup and not having to resort to frequent water change .... Thinking of adding a trickle tower by taking a small slip stream from discharge.

Thoughts much appreciated. Andre.

Sorry. Typo error. I meant I read somewhere "100 inches per 1000 gallons". I currently carry about 50% in excess of guide. Apologies.

I think in an overstocked pond, u cannot avoid carrying out frequent water changes in addition to having maximum filtration and aeration.

Even in my 7.5 ton pond where we keep just 9 koi between 30 - 40 cm, we carry out monthly 5% - 10% water changes.

You can have a higher stocking level that exceeds the rule of thumb if you have high capacity filter that is able to cope with the waste and keep all the water parameter within the acceptable level. To confirm whether your new filter is able to cope, just perform water test regularly to make sure. Your water should also have sufficient disolved oxygen for all the koi.

You may also wish to bear in mind that your current koi will grow pretty fast if the water condition is good. A better idea is definitely to try maintain good water quality to allow the present stock grow instead of adding more koi Smile
