External Filter vs Internal Filter Can't Post

Hi Guys,

After posting the FG tank recommendation on the site, I finally know how big I should build my FG tank. I have sent a letter to HDB and will post the news from them.

Now, I struggling to decide if I go to build an internal filter attached to the tank or have an seperate external bio filter.

I am in favour of the latter as there is more space in the FG tank for the kois.

BUT after speaking to a few people in the koi business, they mentioned that there are problems with external filters as the pump will get choke and the lifespan will be shorten. The water flow will be affected.

Any advices from our koi friends ?

What about those who have external bio-filter that uses a pump to flush the water to the filters, what are your experiences ?

Hi

Personally, i don't see any problem in using external filter. In the matter of fact, all those outdoor koi pond use pump to flush the water to their filter. Another advantage of having external filter is that you can always upgrade it.

What is important is that you keep your water clean. Do not overfeed your koi so that they don't excret that much and also remember to scoop up those excess food should there is any. In short go for the external filter, that is my preference.

Hi, I would like to make a correction here. Most outdoor ponds, especially concrete ones houses their pumps in the last chamber. Filtered water is pumped out from here. As a result of this, water is sucked into the bottom drains or inlets into the filter. An interesting discussion on using fibreglass tanks to keep koi indoors is described by Eric Lim under Forum "Pond Water Quality" under the topic "Rearing Koi In Fiberglass tank". Here we can see that Eric does not use a pump in the tank to push water into filter. He says this would break up the waste and foul up the water. Do check it out. Smile

I do agree with Dr Tan. If you put the pump in the pond, it's use to suck the water into the filtration, hence, breaking up the passing. Furthermore, the vibration caused by the pump is irritating to koi. It would be the best if the pump is located at the last chamber, and since the water in last chamber is clean, this prolong your pump life.

Hi everyone,

Thank you Dr Tan and TS Tang for your advice. I have read Eric Lim's discussion some time back and initially though he was using external filter from the photo but this time I read the topic again carefully and realise that indeed he has 2 filters - an internal filter followed by an external filter.

For those who are interested in the topic discussed, the link can be found below http://www.koi.com.my/ubb/Forum3/HTML/000125.html

My observation about the water using external filter is that there is a brown-coloured film at the edge of the tank. WHAT ARE THOSE???????? Someone told me that this is good for kois ?!????

Lastly, anybody has any advices for those who use external filters and what precaution to take care ?

External Filter vs Internal Filter [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Everyone,

I have an idea of using Eheim pump together with external bio-filter but I am not sure...

This is how my concept goes....

Water from main tank is forced by gravity to the inlet of the ehiem filter (siuated at the based of the FG tank).

Eheim filter trap dirts and pumps up clean water to the FIRST chamber of the external filter on top of the FG tank.

Water flow through the various chambers in the external bio-filter and drop back by gravity.

Achievements (theory)

1) The eheim filter acts as a mechanical filter, therefore, cleaner water is pump up to the bio-filter.

2) The eheim filter is much more easier to clean compare to mechanical filter in bio-filter.

3) No need to buy additional pump as the water for the external filter as water is pump up by Eheim filter.

Questions ?

Can this method work ?
