Feeding Area Can't Post

hi all pond keepers (after all 10% of good koi is from the pond, imho)

the problem with most ponds, well my pond at least, is that with surface skimmers, food seems to be wasted and sucked into. i guess im starting a discussion on creating a feeding area where:
  • water is with less turbulance
  • no skimmers
  • small enough to be separated from main pond but large enough to fit all koi

beautiful pond! I really like how the algae has covered the walls and floor of the pond to give that gorgeous green background in crystal clear water.

Skimmers are a definite necessity. It keeps the pond surface nice and clean, free of debris and prevents biofilm build up on the surface of the water.

Is that your skimmer? the waterway that leads into a part of your pond filled with plants? Why don't you simply put a screen of some sort to keep the pellets from entering. I've seen some made of green plastic and just the right size holes that would be perfect for the job.

In my case, my skimmer is simply a DIY adjustable PVC pipe pointed up and water overflows into it. During feeding, I plug it with a little piece of left over pipe until they finish in a few mins. Perhaps you can plug up your skimmer temporarily with something.

Or how about a feeding ring. Make a square one from PVC pipe or buy a hoola hoop and toss in the pellets in the middle.

Re: [kennethc] Feeding Area [In reply to] Can't Post

hi,
i myself wish that was my pond!! the attachement is my dream pond, got it off an european site. that kind of feeding area im wondering about.

i know what u mean by improvising with DIY, i currently put a plastic mesh whenever i feed (daytime) and take it off during night. but its a hassle lah!

ok, lets try and discuss it this way. let us design a perfect dream pond, with a feeding area like the attached pic. i like feeding area cuz it allows u to hand feed and all kois gather together. food arent wasted. i guess this should work :-

1) no surface skimmers
2) shallow (say 0.5 m)
3) the seperation from main pond should be design like a natural sea bay (teluk), with a narrow channel connecting both.

Maybe if i can get drawing plans to get this going!!

Hope to get a real discussion on.

hi, was reading hence giving some inputs. I believe u can get the cover for the surface skimmers from the hardware shop depending on the size of the said skimmer. Its basically a plastic cup with strips of holes which is small enough to stop food pellets getting into the skimmer. i got mine from the hardware shop....

A better idea is to feed your koi slowly. Instead of dumping all the koi pellets at once, dump them in several small portions so your koi can quickly eat up the pellets and prevent any getting into your skimmer.

A worker at Tanjung Bungah (penang) koi advise me to put one of the air blower output at the skimmer, to be on when feeding. so it disrupt the skimmer. so no food going to the skimmer . However my pond is not so wide (6 feet), that when i open my Hi blow the buble at the bottom feeder really split the pond surface in 2. so I feed at the area that have no skimmerWink.
Father: Shusui. Mother: Platinum doitsu and showa. what am I going to get?
