Filter Construction, alternative? Can't Post

It was a bit of problematic when I start
digging my front garden pond. The idea is to
keep few koi, small fresh water fish and
a couple of arowana.
My pond is 19'*6'*4', which is ideal for front garden where the distance to my entrance stair is around 5' long.
The problem here is (after reading your
discussion topic) what is the alternative
filter construction available for me with
the balance of 3'*6' area to place a filter.
I found from the internet that there is a
pressure filter medium which connected direct
from the filter pump. Have a look at this site, www.pondfiltration.com and pls give your comment on it for my case.
Or in case I have no choice at all pls tell
me how and what to use to build a filter that
comprise 30% of my pond surface area with the
above available space. And can you give
me the shop address that sell the OMNI pump.

Thanks in advance.
MNY

Hello MNY,

Welcome to the forum.

1) Use that space of 3 x 6 ' to build a good settlement chamber.

2) Water that has gone thru' settlement chamber can be pump up to go through a series of elevated bio filter.

3) Try Cheras Aquarium for the OMNI pump. Obtain the address from www.koi.com.my/dealer.html for the address.

Mohd Nordin Yusof,

I have been using the Pondfiltration, Inc PF-3000 for two years in line with a UV light on a 750 US gallon pond with up to 60 inches of fish load. This is a very light load compared to the rating from the dealer and (I think) about 1/4 of the pond you propose. I like the performance and plan to buy the smaller sized unit for a new hospital tank.

This line of filter is very compact. Inside the tank on the filter are three bags of media. Once a week I turn off the pump, rinse the bags, put them back in, and turn the pump back on. Once a year, I put in new gaskets and new filter bags ($$$). My water quality is great, and the media bags are easy to remove for water treatment, if necessary. In addition to cleaning the filter, I skim the pond by hand every day and clean the pump's strainer and the bottom mulm once a week.

I have never gotten the pressure guage to work, though.

A local Koi dealer uses this line of filters on his indoor, highly stocked sales tanks.

I will be glad to answer any questions that you may have.

Kathy

Hello Mohd Nordin Yusof,

Add several Trickle Tower which increase your filter capacity substantially. Such trickle filter will suit you as they need to be elevated anyway.

Refer to this thread for information on trickle filter http://www.koi.com.my/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000026.html

Now after all I'm getting somewhere.

Only one thing more to ask others under this topic. If I reduce my filter height from 4 fts to 3.5 fts, is that enough to support my pond volume of 2200 gallons?. This would mean my filter chamber constitute 30% of my pond volume. I 've read somewhere that it is ideal enough at this rate. To achieve this ratio I did reduce my pond size to 17.5*5*4 fts and also increase my filter chamber to 3*10 fts with the height of 3.5 ft instead of 4 fts. At 3.5 fts it is easy enough for me to maintain it every week.

Any suggestion and comment pls.

Hi MNY,

Filter need not be as deep as the pond. 3.5' is definitely OK.

Cheers
