Filter Medium Supply Can't Post

Hai again, thanks for the recommendation from members on my filter construction alternative. I decided to build the concrete filter with four chambers and equip it with the bottom drain. I will pray for it to work.

Other thing is that, you guys was talking about the green matting for bio chamber. Can anybody share the info on where can I get in KL. Further more I going to place my filter medium as follows:
1st chamber= carl net hanging from top to bottom.
2nd and 3rd chamber=stock it with green matting.
4th chamber=place a sand sack to clean the water before it drains out to pond.

My first chamber is 3'*1.5'*4', second and third chamber is 3'*2.5'*4' and the fourth is 3'*1.5'*4'.

Is it good enough?

I build this pond for a combination of koi and water garden plant which is going to be placed in the pond. The only worries me is that, to get the right PH and a good filter placing to stabilise the water.

I'm the beginner, and recommendation is very welcome.

Hi MNY,

From the above, I can see that your filter will have a surface area of 8' x 3'. On the other hand, your pond has a surface are of 19' x 6'. Hence the surface are is a mere about 20% of the pond surface. Hence the filter size is not enough.

The settlement Chamber also looks small. You will have to make the settlement chamber bigger. The last chamber can be smaller as it will be used to pump the water up and you can lead this water to an array of trickle filter. Additional trickle filter must be added to boost filter capacity.

Cheers

Hi MNY,

How do you make the water flow from your main pond to the filter? Is it through bottom drain? If so, be careful regarding the size of the pipe. Mine is too small. As a result, the pump in the last chamber cannot operate at full power. If operate at full power it will drain the last chamber.

Regarding the filter mat, Syarikat Atari in Tmn Desa has a lot of it. 2m x 1m is about RM180.00.

Good luck

Thanks alot for that, with regard to the water flow it will be feeded to the filter settlement chamber using pump. As I do not have any other alternative because of space limitation. I hope for the best and will try to add another array of trickle filter. Thanks also CCH for the idea.

How about feeding water to the settlement chamber using mid water flow. Using pump is definitely not a good idea as the pumping action will churn up the water and the heavy fish waste may disintegrate and then may not be trapped by the settlement chamber.

Try the pump in the last chamber to bring the water to trickle filter.

Well that's the best if could set it up. I have a problem of the area where the pond is surrounded by the concrete pavement. originally build with the house. The filter placement area is around 4' away and separated by the concrete pavement also from the pond. Last night I make a decision to extend the filter chamber from 8' to 10' to accomodate the 30% ratio of surface needed.

The problem like water churning will definately happen. In solving the problem of disintagrade fish waste can I used the coral in second chamber instead?. The third chamber will be filled with green matting.
The chamber shall be adjust as follows:
1st = 3'
2nd and 3rd = 3'
4th = 1'

What do you think?.

Hello MNY,

With churning water and if you place coral in the 2nd chamber, then all the minute fish waste will definitely be trapped in all the small pores of the coral. Not for long, your filter will be clog and unless you take up your coral for cleaning in close interval, your koi will fall sick.

Read this thread for extensive discussion on coral http://www.koi.com.my/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000029.html

The size of your filter now look much better and if you do not overstock, your pond should be fine. By then you will have to solve the churning water problem if possible.

Cheers
