You need to do a lot of reading :)

For example, start over at www.makc.com - The Mid Atlantic Koi Club and head over to their library and articles section. There you will find plenty of articles on koi, koi building and so much more.

There are many designs on building a biofilter - search in google under "DIY pond filter" and "DIY biofilter" for example. "DIY trickle towers" are also a good thing to look at.

Basically what you need is to have a filter that can contain 30% of the volume of your pond, especially if you are using submerged media.

Basically, you will need:

*Power tool like a drill
*Hole saw - for making a hole in the container/barrel etc
*A plan from the internet
*One or more containers/drums
*Filter media - there are many to choose from
*Basic plumbing knowledge
*Tank connectors from the plumbing store
*Air pump and air lines if you are using japanese matting

As you can see there are many variations online and much has been written on the topic.

Hello, apart from the tools and reading ALOT, The basics are you need to have the water from your pond constantly running over and thru your bio media in the drums,I would recommend trickle towers as they are very easy to make! And think Big! You cant go wrong, so dont think a small 1inch piping, at minimum 2 or 3 inch diameter and I say think big as in time your koi will grow bigger or you will have more, so instead of having to RE make another filter, just do things BIG, then when you have more specific questions we can give more answers!
