Harvesting Rain Water For Koi Pond Use Can't Post

Hi,

Has anyone built a rainwater collection system and devised ways to store and treat rain water safe for koi pond use?

With the price of water going up from RM30 to RM1000 since I built my pond, and RO systems costing a bomb, treated rain water seems a much preferred alternative. My kois seem to thrive and grow faster during the rainy season, perhaps from improved water quality.

Thanks for the tips in advance.

Best Regards,
Jeff

jeff,

the guttering on the roof of my house collects water and channels this directly into my pond without treatment. whilst this can bring some settled pollutants and debris with the first wash, i've had no issues with the quality of the water especially under heavy rain. the only times when it can be a concern, is with light showers after many days of no rain when settled pollutants and debris can be higher than normal. haze and other environmental problems can make matters worse. but note that any debris coming down is not noticeable ie i've not had an visible problems before. if you're worried, than i suggest installing a gate/ valve so that you have the choice of flushing through the first 5-10mins of water out into the garden, before redirecting to the pond. i've only had to supplement with water from the taps once (but that's because i stupidly left an extraction pump on and forget to shut it, causing the water level to drop by a foot).

the piping from the roof would have to be of quite a large diameter, otherwise with the deluges that we get in malaysia, the volume of water is incredible, and i can see the overflow pipes struggling to cope. and with the overflow pipes, you would need to ensure that it can match the volume inflows. the good thing is that with regular rain, there's regular cycling of the water, and after heavy rains the water is very clear. there may be some rebalancing of the water parameters, but again i've found no problems to-date.

Hi

Just a word of caution rainwater is very soft and so has little or no GH or KH in it. This means your pond could suffer from low levels of KH & GH unless you are buffering like mad you could suffer a PH crash and this is a bad thing.

There is nothing wrong with rain water except it can be a little acidic and this can also lead to PH crashing so you would need to pay special attention to crushed shells and adding mineral clay on a regular basis.

Hope this helps

Andy
