Help! Can't Post

Hello everyone.

I have a problem. In the last couple day we have been having a lot of earthquakes in my area and during the largest one a crack has appeared in my pond and leaking out at a quick pace. What should i do?

and when it gets repair will it continue to crack along its path? the pond was lined with steal reinforcement when it was constructed and has cement about 4 inches thick and more in some areas.

Thanks A Million!!

Hi Mikey,

The forces of nature can be one of our worst enemies.

The only solution I can think of is move the koi to a hospital tank and line the pond with butile linner or PVC liner of some sort. There is no quick fix for cracks in a concrete pond that I know of.

Once this hectic period of angry nature has passed you can repair the pond with concrete and maybe fibre glass resin. Depends on your preference.

so as I suggest above I would move the koi to a plastic or canvas hospital tank and line the pond. Obviously you will need to drain the pond before hand and remove any sharp points. Butile can get expensive if you get the top notch version which is 3 - 4 ply. But I would suggest geeting the cheapest version for now as it's only a temporary messure.

If the quakes are over, then you could just drain the pond and repair the damage. remeber to let the cement cure before refilling the pond. 2 weeks should do you.

I don't know what else to suggest as I thankfully have never experienced a tremmor let along a quake.

I hope this helps.

Stuart

Stuart,

Thanks For your prompt reply. I plan on transfering the koi to a temp pond (lil kids toy pool 500gallon) and then draining the pond and repairing it. i was able to find many pond repairing products at http://www.vnwg.com But i still have one question based on your comment about Fibre Glass resin after applying the resin how long should you wait before filling or using and does it leech out any hazardous stuff after curing?

Thanks Alot for your help

Hi,

The Fibre Glass resin would have to be mixed with a waterproof sealant to give you the best results. However I would not recoomend using this if the crack is quite would be subject to allot of pressure. I would only recommend using it at a max depth of about 30 - 40cm.

You state that you have a mini swimming pool for your koi while repairs are underway. Excellent. If its a concrete pond, you may as well repair the crack with concrete. You will need to leave it for a min of 2 weeks before adding the water back. This will give the cement enough time to cure. so that it won't upset your PH when the koi go back in.

I hope you manage to sort this out without too much time and expense.

Stuart
