If I pump water into a channel running through my garden and then back into the pond again, would that be a sufficient form of filteration. The total surface area of the channel would be greater than my pond surface are.

I intend to put plants into the water channel like the Yam tree.

Any thoughts on this?

Hi, it's a good idea. However make sure that the channel is clean and well maintained at all time and free from accidental pollution from nearby sources. Besides Yam, you could also try Pandan and 'Money' plant. Smile

Does that mean that I do not need any filter media? Is it sufficient to run the water through the chanel and back into the pond ?

If the surface area which you mentioned is indeed larger than the pond surface area, my next question to you is " Are they able to cultivate bio bugs?" If they do then there is no need to have filter media.

Honestly its difficult to give you a clear cut answer. The best answer will be from the results shown by the test kits.

Hi, maybe I misunderstood your intentions. I thought you were using the channel like a waterway with vegetations to absorb nitrates. Whatever you want to use it for, make sure that you can manage and maintain it easily because it can easily turn messy after sometime. The thought of adding filter media into a waterway has not crossed my mind before. Any forum member out there would care to comment? The important thing is are you getting good water test results without the channel. If the answer is no, then you could try an alternative like a trickle tower filter.

Sorry, maybe I have been unclear.

My intentions are to run the water through a channel without pumping the water through any form of filter box/media.

Just planning to use plants in the channel as a filteration system. Would that work?

Hi, pls correct me if I'm wrong. You intend to pump unfiltered pond water directly into the channel and back into the pond after going thru some vegetation. Eventhough the surface area of the channel may be larger than the surface area of the pond, it is not advisable to do so. Firstly, you need to have at least a proper prefilter or even better a settlement chamber to trap solid waste. Then there is the question of removal of such waste conveniently on a regular basis since they accumulate rapidly. Secondly, you definitely need bio-filtration. A trickle tower and/or existing bio-chamber is needed to remove ammonia/nitrites. Thirdly, nitrates could be removed by the trickle tower too or by the vegetation in the channel. I do not know whether it is possible to modify the existing channel into a multichambered filter unless we know the dimensions. Smile
