Installing bottom drains Can't Post

I saw an earlier post on this forum about installing bottom drains in ponds. I don't have one in my pond at present but plan on putting one in next Spring. Am also planning a new pond and plan on putting in a bottom drain. I have some concern as my land drains very poorly and there is extremely high water table. Soil is clay. When I cleaned out the old pond at the end of this April, as the water drained out of the pond the liner ballooned up with water from underneath, and actually reached a height of 2'. This was water in the surrounding soil that was able to fill the space once the pressure of inside water was gone. I am concerned about the pressure from the high water table on a bottom drain. Do these drains develop leaks frequently or once installed properly are they virtually leak free. Also do you ever have problems with them becoming clogged with debris. Thank you.

Hi Pat,

In our case, bottom drain are made using 4" PVC pipe attached to the bottom of pond base which is made of concrete. As long as you have your pond base and the bottom drain fixly in place without movement, there will no unnecessary stress on the system and it will last for a long time.

In your case when you use liner in a high water table condition, any movement will strain the joint and will promote leakage later. Hence you may wish to consider building a concrete pond Smile

Hi Pat
I will not recommend that you install one either. Seen a handful with joint-leakage back in UK.

Regards.
