Is Settlement Tank + Trickle T w/o other bio-filters sufficient

Hi all, I have read somewhere that certain people employ only a settlement tank, and a group of trickle systems with good results for a large pond. I understand that most others basically add on a trickle system to further complement their existing overflow bio-filters. If it is from the stand-point of a person who is trying to build a filter system from scratch, is it sufficient to have only a settle-ment tank (no mech filters, just using vortex flow to force waste to stay at the bottom of the settlement tank), connected to a trickle system with only bio-balls. I recall reading from Mark Richman's reports on his t.t. studies that the t.t. could minimise nitrites, ammonia and most effectively nitrates. Pls comment as some of us who are trying to improve our ready-built rotten filtration system may have space issues fitting up a 3-stage overflow to a t.t. On the same subject, can anyone comment also on the effectiveness of having only a eheim (filter cannister with built-in pump and mech filtration) connected to a t.t.? ------------------ Rgds, WS.
