Hi all,

I chanced upon this K1 look alike at a petshop. Anybody know if its any good? The product description is all written in Indian... all I can make out is Bacteria Digester, but it seems to be promising when placed in a moving bed filter

Correction, this product is from Thailand. And its name is Box Digester. Anybody know if this is any good?

Hola Kenneth!

Are those available locally?

looks really good especially in the middle part, more surface area.
did you ask how much they cost?

I dont think it really matters if it's made in India, China or etc. could be wrong thou.

It looks like it would have a tremendous amount of surface area. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to buy some if the price was right. The latest from Kalness is a combination of K3 media (larger than K1) and a Biochip Wafer which has a multitude of microdrilled holes. This product looks like it would combine the two types into a single media.

The product does look promising, however the big question is if it'll float and churn like bioflo or kaldness. It is a lot cheaper than kaldness, but available in small bags only, half the size of a big bag of potato chips. And the petshop has only a very limited supply of 9 bags, barely enough to fill a chamber I think. I'll buy one bag and see if it works.

fff, I don't know where in Thailand he bought it. But the petshop is here in the Philippines, unless you're also a pinoy? Wink

well, I did it. Bought a small bag and tested it out in a jar and an aquarium air pump. Looks like this won't fly Frown

I've observed that because of its squarish shape, they end up just stacking on top of each other. Even throtling the air pump full blast and using two air stones, only a few really churn. Plus they're too buoyant. I've read that K1 needs to be soaked in the water for sometime before becoming semi-buoyant. Perhaps I need to do the same?

Kenneth,

Try to soak them in PP(potassium permanganate) for a few hours then rinseSmile. I've done the same thing with my K1 and Bioflo before I used them. The PP will clean any left over chemicalsWink

Re: [kennethc] K1 Kaldness / cheap version [In reply to] Can't Post

Just an update. It seems my initial test was wrong after all and I needed to leave them in the water for a while so they'd become less buoyant. Here's a little video I made of the result

As you can see, they do churn like K1 and most likely could work. But one point that Koi38 did raise though is because of the narrow gaps in the middle, dirt might get trapped so they might not pass the self cleaning criteria.

If anyone is interested this is available in thailand for about 150 TB per liter. This is a little less than K1 and I may be willing to ship to any members interested (if you pay shipping of course). I can ship very low rates to US addresses otherwise, I don't know what it may cost...

Be careful what you are buying,... while it may cost less than K-1 kaldnes media there is a reason.

Just some points to ponder...
- K-1 (K-3) is designed/engineered to take the forces exerted on it while in a fluid moving bed; the media bashing into each other 24/7 year after year still maintains it's shape. You would not believe the amount of stress placed on each individual piece of media.
- during the manufacture process the plastic for K-1 (K-3) is positively charged - this acts as an attractant to bacteria
- K-1 kaldnes is designed to be semi-buoyant. Did you know there are two variations of K-1? One for freshwater and one for seawater. Both are manufactured slightly different to allow the media to be buoyant as well as house a bio-bacteria load(weight) for use in a fluidized bed filter system.

I know so many forms of plastic that break down easily under impacted stress - that's the last thing I want in my bio-filter.

Here's a test,... take a piece of this media you've purchased and try to crush it between your thumb and forefinger ... if it's easily squashed then spend your money elsewhere.

Kind Regards, Terri

Re: [TerriJ] K1 Kaldness / cheap version [In reply to] Can't Post

I completely agree with caveat emptor and offer even more points to ponder....

Having spent many years designing and testing filtration systems, I am skeptical of what I can only refer to as 'hype' in the aquarist hobby.

For example, any claim that K1 is positively charged to attract bacteria would qualify as hype. Extracellular polymeric substances and soluble microbial products are in fact what initially adhere to a substrate in the induction phase of biofilm formation (not bacteria). This occurs by Van-der-Waals attraction (not an electrostatic attraction). The ion exchange process on the surface of biofilm does in fact produce a negative charge but this is not the same as saying the bacteria are negatively charged.

In the case of waste water treatment, fouling due to sludge significantly reduces flux (therefore reducing filtration). A moving bed media ensures consistent flux and increases DO which assists flocculation and prevents 'cake' accumulation which alleviates the need to backwash.

Primarily, aquaria filters benefit from increased flux. DO is (or should) already be high. Backwashing, while burdensome, doesn't create the same kind of sludge management problems in aquaria filters as it does in waste water applications.

K1 was designed for waste water filtration. It works great in aquaria filters mainly due to higher and more consistent flux. But, so would any moving media.

What do you think it costs to manufacture K1 in bulk? There is certainly a reason it costs more....I think it is advertising.

Regards, Neil
