K1 it ROCKS..!!! yeah baby Can't Post

OK OK so I am a little excited about K1 (Kaldness) media.....(think I need to go out more)

I have switched to an EAZY instead of the Answer and its great.

For a mechanical filter all you need is a tank of static K1 about 30 to 50 litres let it get all gummed up and it makes a great filter for fine particals like a bead filter I guess.

Cleaning is a breeze all you do is stop the flow isolate the chamber and add loads of air for a few minutes then drain to waste SOOO EAZY..Sly

I bet Koi 38 is secretly working on a home build already..Wink

Hi Andy,

A little excited..........I think you are over the moonTongue

I aready made one for a young friend who has 2400L pond using blue drums and 20L bucket for staticWink I made a static/settlement combo and moving bed too, We used Bioflo media(same as K1). It works really well and like you said all you need is turn the air on to clean the static and flush the wasteCoolWink

So K1 can be used for mechanical filtration in place of traditional brushes? So theoretically, you could have a 4 chamber filter area all filled with K1? I'm planning on a new pond and I'm thinking about something like this. What is "static" K1? Thats the same K1 right, just not moving/aerated? How about 1 chamber filled with static K1 and 3 chambers with aerated K1, would that work? Thanks.

Kenneth,

a lot of ppl now a days use static K1 or similar media in their settlementSmile

How about 1 chamber filled with static K1 and 3 chambers with aerated K1, would that work?
It will work, why notTongue For the moving bed to work or to churn properly the chambers or containers have to be either round or square(round it preferable) So you'll have 1st chamber static then the rest are moving bedCool

Sorry I did not reply....working

The static K1 is the same stuff but it gets packed into a chamber and not allowed to move it then is very good at trapping all debris. When it comes time to clean you add lots of air to the chamber and allow it to boil up. This seperates the K1 from the dirt then you just drain the tank out....easy. Moving bed is used for Bio filtration and you keep it moving all the time with air. This keeps it clean and oxygenated.

Cheers

Re: [andymadd] K1 it ROCKS..!!! yeah baby [In reply to] Can't Post

My apologies Sifus, I know this is an old post, but this type of thread is what I'm looking for.

K1 static bed is used for mechanical filtering right? And K1 in a moving bed is used for bio-filtering?

I'm planning on running 3 settlement tanks (in parallel) using 55 gal drums with a slight centrifugal velocity. I'm trying to think of the best way to mechanically filter all of the fish pooh once it has been blitz through the pump (the system is pump driven).
Would brushes be better then K1 at mechanical filtering of the fine particles? There's an elbow on the inside of each 2" input pipe that directs the flow of water in a clockwise rotation. If I didn't add aeration to this, would this be considered a moving bed? or static bed? I can stop the rotation of the water if I remove this elbow to make the K1 more static.

So my question is, would brushes be better at mechanically filtering out fine particles or static K1?

I was thinking of using K1 in a moving bed in the 4th drum (first 3 drums link and flow into 4th drum) and that would flow into a 'skippy' style 5th drum using green pot scrubbies or Matala gray/fine Japanese mat. That's why I'm hesitant about making the first 3 drums into a moving bed because there will not be a mechanical filter. Pond water straight to bio-filters are bad ideas right?Frown

I'm just looking for some guidance, and I appreciate all the wisdom that yee Sifus will bestow upon me.Wink I've read alot so far, but some answers still elude me. I humbly await your wisdom,
