KOI in portable pool? Can't Post

Hi guys

I'm currently just started this hobby in aquarium.

I have this idea, is it ok if I use those portable swimming pool to keep my koi there?

Building a pond is not a choice right now. I think I can get bigger area with this rather than FB?

It has enough depth (like 4-5ft) and diameter depends on size. 12ft or 6ft is available. The only thing is need to design the filter.

What do you think?

Thanks

Hi norazli,

There are many fold-away plastic fabric portable fish pond which comes with attached filtration system.
These are either retangular or circular in shape and some hobbyists uses that for quarantine tank
purposes or in Koi Show. To find out more on the product, you may want to contact Danny Wong
on H/P No. 012 203 8963. Danny Wong has displayed this product during the Sentul Park Centre Koi Show
held last year.

Hi Norazli,

Sorry, I do not know of any websites concerning the product. I think the retangular shape vinyl
pond size was 6'0" x 4'0" x 20" high whereas the round size pond was 10'0" diameter. Pricing,
I think around RM300-00 for the portable pond only excluding the filter chambers and pump etc.
I think Sentul Park Koi and UCP Aquafarm in Kelana Jaya has some of these portable ponds being
used in their premises. Please note that these portable vinyl ponds are only for temporary usage
and not for long term becos' the filtration system is not efficient enough for good koi keeping,
in my opinion.

Ok, or maybe I should leave it in the aquarium first and perhaps get a proper FG until I can have the pond (when house is ready sometimes early next year)?

For aquarium, I think I need to change the water 50% at least once a week or sometimes twice a week.Otherwise the water turn cloudy a bit.

Hello, I use pools! They work great! They are nice as nice looking as a concret pond , but they are great! They are made with the idea of kids jumping in and climbing on them, in other words they are built strong! They are portable!!! So the money invested is never realy lost, and at worst case, you can use them as a pool. What is important to consider is that you need to MAKE your filter system, pools and koi ponds are very different things, pools use clorine to keep them clean, so the filter systems for pools are not designed to filter fish shit! They are designed to filter a few small things and that is it, koi ponds and the filters are different, NO CLORINE, so you must make and use a BIO LOGICAL FILTER! I would recomend making trickle towers as filters, they are easy to make, and will work better than a POOL FILTER! Remember, the sales person at a pool store does not know the difference between a koi and a shark, he Should KNOW about pools, so dont ask him anything about a koi pond, he will tell you whatever to sell a pool filter , which cost alot more, HE IS THERE TO SELL!!! If you need more help , let me know!

Hi Jim

Thanks for the info. Appreciate it.

Do you have any picture? Can fwd to me? I will PM you my email add.

Btw, I just got another filter for my aquarium This time the filter box comes with 4 sections. With that i can simulate the big filter. Plan to use the 2 sections for filter medium and the other 2 for bacteria house. Will do it tomorrow.

Hi norazli,

I'm not sure of your location but if it doesn't freeze were you are there is the choice of building an above ground pool if you're handy. My friend Chad had one for ten years while he was renting and moved it often. You make a frame with 2 by4s. and exterior grade plywood and line with liner (Don't use nails- long screws or bolts are best to take the weight of the water pressing outward). The upper sill that you can sit on has to be made with something that is not toxic(untreated wood) but the rest doesn't contact the water. Put in a couple of papyrus and a trickle tower and you would be surprised how easy it is to care for. I believe Chad's was 3 by 8 by 2 feet deep. He used a black net over the top to keep the fish in and other animals out.

Re: [norazli] KOI in portable pool? [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been using one of these portable swimming pools for about 2 years.

They're ok but they aren't permanent.

One of the main problems is that the dirt at the bottom is difficult to clear, especially with koi.

If you want to see some of these, there's a place at Kelana Jaya, just by the LDP. It's on the first floor of one of the shops among the row of shops opposite the catholic church near Kg Chempaka. You can see some of them thru the window. Unmistakable shade of blue.

If you're heading towards the Federal Highway from SS2, the shops are on your left just by the LRT-2 elevated railway tracks.
