The only real difference is size and surface area. K1 is considerably smaller, but compacts in a fluidized system much better to give more surface area per cubic foot. K3 is a very good media, and it does not plug off as easily as K1, but neither is really prone to plugging to begin with. K3 media is often used in conjunction with the new Kaldness biochip media, which is a thin wafer full of holes for microscopic organisms to live in.
