Hi rush,

Are those stones at the bottom of your pond? I suggest you take them out to allow more efficient cleaning. Kois are unlike other aquarium fishes, the defecate ammonia.

As for your filter area design, i suggest that you view this:

Hope this helps :)

Hi Ivo,

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, i agree that i must take out the stones as i think that the stones are not growing as fast as the walls of my pond. I was even thinking of getting some sort of a black floor mat to make the fishes colours more outstanding.

Been reading that thread as well, currently my pond is using only shells, should i change or add a different type of filtering besides the shells?

Hi there,

I think you could do with more filter media in the chamber with the lone white pvc stand pipe and place more air-stones for oxygen supply into the transfer port i.e. the narrow chamber which you have some filter media in it now.

I suspect there are some problem with your pump / water circulation in the system.
Normally, the water level in the pump chamber will be the same with the pond water level. In this case, there ain't a lot of water in your pump chamber. BTW, do you
have timber decking over the filtration chambers from sunlight?

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa

Hi!

It really depends on your budget. I'm one who enjoys cheap thrills in discovering alternatives to those expensive items, or in this case, filter media.

I'm using shells myself and so far, they're getting the job done :)

Hi Thiamhwa,

Appreciate your feedback. Yes, i believe theres something major faulty with the pump as previously it was higher than the UV light. Yes, i suspect that there is a major faulty with one of the pumps as there is a slight noise coming out from 1 of the pumps. Btw, i'm too scared to open it up, as i think that the fan is not turning properly which i think the main reason why the water level is low.

Regarding the filter media, i was thinking of putting in more japanese mat or "scotch-brite" kind of material in there as right now, my pond is very murky.

Any ideas as how to make the floor of the pond darker or black-er?

Hi Ivo,

Well right now the shells are not working as it should so i'm thinking of changing to a different type of shell & inserting the japanese/sponge mats in between the shells for better filtering.
