I have been researching through this site and have found little discussion on lighting for indoor tanks. I would like us to have a discussion around on pond lightings. If you have any knowledge any experience, please share with me. Those of us who own indoor ponds or tanks know that lights are essential not only to beautify the landscape but also simulate sunlight for our kois. Why ? There are a number of resons but from my experience, koi kept in poorly lighted tanks tends to lost their colours. Many fish hobbiest have aquarium lights, mostly submersible type. We know that the aquarium lights make all the fishes look so beautiful. If you have a kohaku, you will be smiling because the Hi looks so red. The problem is that submersible lights tends to give off heat in the pond, risk electrical leakage and the flickering of the light (when it is turned on) frighten the kois. The protective glass also cut off UV ray thus reducing promotion of good alage. Cost range from S$60 and above. Halogen lights mounted on top of your tank, side of wall etc are too hot and make you sweat if you stay too long near the tank. It also waste a lot of electricity. Cost range from S$ 35 and above. White flurescent light hang above your tank are good but you need a lot of them to create UV. Cost range from $20 and above. I found out that some koi hobbiest uses metal halide lamp to light their tank. The light ray is so powerful that it penetrate deep into the tank. A 70W MH light gives off 300W of lights. Those who installed it have good growth of algae at the bottom and side of the tank. The koi colours are also very rich. COST IS S$200 and above. The latter cost is expensive but does anyone know other lightings available from the market ? Maybe, we can share in this forum and let us learn from each other.
