Lost all my larger koi, bummer Can't Post

We had finally finished the added section to our pond. Put all our larger koi, males and females in this section. Well this Thanksgiving, we went on vacation to visit family in Fla. Came back to no water, well almost no water in the pond. I had a friend who was supposedly watching out pond. I had left the water running slightly into the new section of the pond as we had been loosing some water. He came on Mon and checked and everything looked fine, some water froze over in the bog, he cleaned that out. The water was high and he shut the water off. On Tues night we get home to almost no water, maybe a foot. The larger kois where dead. But what was strange, there was alot of fish missing out of the pond. The neighbor said he had a bear in his garbage, he gets that alot. That is down the street. So what I was wondering, I know bears will have dinner on our koi. Wonder how fast they eat. From Mon to Tues night, we lost most of the koi. That sure is just sitting there and eating. How many can they consume in a day??

Anyway, anyone have any koi for adoption. We had such lovely koi, I didn't even want to go out there to see the few that where left in the older pond. I stayed away from there from Thanksgiving to just the other day.

Email me if you live near Ga and have any to adopt out. Thanks Lynda,

Such a sad sad time.

Do you have pics of your pond? Did you see any footprints of animals around the pond? Its better to pin point the problem so it wont happen again.
Do you live in a city or countryside?

Sorry to hear about the Koi. A couple of lawn chairs with scare crows by the edge of the pond, with a talkshow on the radio will keep bears at a distance. Put an old pair of socks -and an old shirt that hasnt been cleaned in the chair with them, and switch them out every couple of days with" fresh" dirty laundry. You want the bear to hear you, see you and smell you.

That's a great idea thanks. We will try that when the bears come down from the mountains. That happened around thanksgiving. They should of been up in the mountains getting ready for hibernation. I will definitely try your idea. Thanks Lynda and Al

Hi, we live in the country. There was a bear in our neighbors yard, just down the road. Kept raiding the trash cans. They where down off of the mountains longer, because we had a warmer winter. Also they are loosing their homes, because homes are being built on their mountains. Why don't people learn, leave the mountains alone. Hey bears where seen near Atlanta. I have some pictures, I think I posted some in the past. Yes our friend had seen the foot prints around the pond and there where rake marks in the liner from the claws. We had to patch a brand new liner. That was a bummer. Hard to pin point a problem with the bear. But one man gave us an idea which sounds great. We will try that this year. Right now the bears are up in the mountains with lots of berries to keep them occupied and fish in the streams. But this fall we will have to do something. Take care,

The birds have always been a problem. Wading birds can be detered by criss crossing the pond with fish line at 8inches above the water level. They dont like to trip on the lines. Make them good and tight. Or a cover called a mist net will also protect them from waders, and dive-bombers such as king fishers.

Yes Ive used scarecrow sprinkelers. They are realy effective also. It wont hit the dive bombers till its too late though. A combined effort will up the chances of saving fish.

Smile Hey, that's great to hear... I intend to hook 2 additional 'slave' sprinklers to a single Scarecrow... Dive bommers are not my problem... just Large Egrits and herrons...

Linda,
Ebay Scarecrows are pricey..try amizon.com.. 59.00 shiping is free... better than Ebay...
Seems they come with/without a double hose connection..if you intend to hook a slave or a 2nd screcrow.. make sure you get the one with 2 connections.

Re: [jimar1] Lost all my larger koi, bummer [In reply to] Can't Post

jimar1, I wonder what makes those scarecrows so expensive. I guess the motion thing that makes it turn on when something is walking by. Thanks for letting me know about that double hose connection, I didn't think of that. I am going to also do the scarecrow thing.

Until this last year we never had a problem with anything eating our koi. I guess we have been lucky. We had seen one Heron, I scared it away. That was about 3 years ago. I wonder why this year. As I said before, they are building on the mountains around here and they just are chasing the bears into town. There was one in Atlanta somewhere. Said it was walking around. Just like people ruining a good thing, in this case our mountains.

Thanks for that info Lynda

If you look at the a pic of one (see ebay ...scarecrow sprinkler) there are 2 hose connections.. The explanation suggest that you have to can connect 2 scarecrows together... my thought was to use one SC and a slave which you can get at Harbour Freight... Don't know if they will work that way!!! Already have the slave now to get the SC....
Shouldn't be that expensive!!!... THe motion unit is cheap...comes on many toys, etc... just about the only game in town... there is a 2nd unit but it is just about the same price....
