The Trashcan Towers [In reply to] Can't Post

At the head of the stream these two $4 trashcans are loaded with bags of lavarock and lithaqua. There is polymat to knock out the fine detrius that the strainer basket misses.
Flowrate app 90-100gpm, soon to be reduced to 50gpm with the rest bypassing all filters and going straight to the large waterfallCool

Bagged lavarock and lithaqua.

The results [In reply to] Can't Post

I used lavarock (2 bags), lithaqua (1 bag), and mats (4) that were already seeded from the holding pond we used during the remodeling. To this we added 3 more bags of lithaqua, 4 more bags of aged lavarock, several unseeded mats, and the old water from the holding pond (enough to fill the pond 1/2 way). As a result of using seeded filter material, preconditioned water from the holding pond topped off with tap water, and the fantastic aeration we get from the waterfalls and streambed the whole system kicked off like it had been there foreverCool. No airstones, no uv, no pea soup green water (in spite of several rain showers and hot sunny weather with no shade on the pond). Todays readings after less than 2 weeks running the system.
Ammonia 0.0
Nitrite 0.0
Nitrate 0.0
PH 7.8-8.0

Hi Larz1..

I'm interested about lithaqua coz i've tried bactapur product such as klear with good result.
I can't find in indonesia
Where to find lithaqua and the price?
it's said to raise kh so it also raise tds and make our water harder?
i heard it is good to have soft water

Lithaqua is a calcified medeteranian algae similar to coral. It will add kh hardness to the water if the ph falls, but only as needed to prevent a crash. It's main purpose is to act as a biomedia surface as the bacteria will colonize on it directly and receive calcium carbonate nutrients from it in the filtration process which enhances nitrobacter function.
I don't know where it is available in your part of the world, but if you google their website I'm sure they have a list of distributors somewhere. If not you could email them and ask.

Hi Larz1.
I thought you live in malaysia so i ask this question because we're not far away apart.
maybe i can find this product in malaysia or singapore?
and how much it cost?
what do you thing about its performance compare to bacteria house?
i emailed pactapur but they offer buy from them (have to be big volume)instead of refer nearest distributor.

Sorry, I'm in the USA and I only know of one distributor here.
If you can't find a local source you might consider using coarse Coral and Oyster shell instead. They will provide a very similar result to the lithaqua and should be much easier to find in the local market.

This system looks brilliant.Cool

How much would you charge to come up north a few hundred miles and help me install a similar system?Wink

My pond is 240,000 gallons and will be fed 200-250 lbs of pellets this year. Could a system like this be super-sized to accomodate a much bigger pond?

HA!!! Brilliant is probably too generous, but I'll take it anywayWink
250,000 gallons! Now that's some serious water right there...
If I was going to put together a system like that I'd probably go with long multi-chamber watercourses for settlement/mechanical separation on several circuits. Probably 2 or three fed by bottom drains and one for a skimmer circuit. Settlement assisted by brushes for the mechanical followed by well aerated fluidized media for stage 1 biofiltration. Then I'd have large axial prop pumps to feed final bio/polishing bays filled with lithaqua/coarse coral/oyster shell/lavarock. Axial props move massive amounts of water at very low electrical consumption. They're low head, but for a long 1 or 2 trough shower setup they work great.
I may have missed it, but you ought to post a diagram of your planned setup.

Wow! I'm going to break down this answer and study it. Maybe if I research enough previous posts on other threads then I can visualize the proposal better. All this stuff is exciting, isn't it? :)
